Hi flyball dogs,

We are all canine athletes so my mama was wondering how your parents keep you conditioned. My mama was going to try hydrotherapy with me just for sport conditioning. I have had some knee issues in the past so she thought this was a good way for me to get some low impact strengthening exercise. What to you guys think? Is it just a waste of money? Should she just take me to the beach more often?

I am a lefty so I do my swimmers turn to the left. Is it important to do stretches or turns the other way so I dont get any injuries due to me only turning one way? The most important thing to my mama is my health but the most important thing to me is having fun so sometimes I can go crazy and push myself a little to hard and I dont know when to stop. I was wondering if there were any good ways to keep me in tip top shape for the sport that I love.

Casey, my momma keeps me in good shape, along with my brothers and sister. We do lots of fun things like go swimming, chase tennis balls, and play frisbee. Mom says it's good for us to run up and down hills so she plays this mean trick on us. At one of our parks she throws the tennis ball down the hill into the creek. It's a steep hill and once I get to the bottom, I have to run back up the hill to bring the ball back. It makes my legs burn but mom says it keeps us all in good shape and helps build the muscles in our back legs. We also like to do a thing mom calls power jumping. Instead of the regular 4 jumps, mom and her buddies set up 12 jumps!! UPHILL!!! At first I thought I couldn't do it, but it's so much fun! One person stands at the top of the hill with tennis balls and then four dogs are at the bottom of the hill. One at a time our mommies let us go and we chase each other up the hill, over all the jumps and get our tennis balls waiting at the top. It's not a steep hill but it sure is tiring when there are 12 jumps! Mom says I play this game good because I love my tennis ball. Mojo just likes to run with the other dogs when he gets to the top of the hill so mom has to have his tuggie back at the bottom of the hill to get him to bring his ball back to her. When we aren't doing flyball drills we loooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeee to swim. Mom says we live right on a lake (I think we live in a house but whatever Mom says is right) so we go swimming a lot. The water feels really good on hot summer days and mom says after an hour of swimming we are all more tired than after an hour of running. I don't know what she's talking about cause I never get tired. Besides a lot of running and playing (like 5 days a week for 2 hrs) Mom likes to play tug with us. She always does this thing where she hold the tug in both hands and I grab the middle and she holds my front feet off of the ground. I have to pull a lot harder with my back legs and I can feel them get stronger.

Anyway, I know that's a lot of stuff, but just tell your mom to take you out off leash for a couple of hours a day about 5 days a week. Tell her that you LOVE to run so invest in a Chuckit and throw tennis balls really far for you to chase. Make sure you tell her to bring plenty of water for you to drink OR even better, tell her to take you to a creek, pond or lake to play!!! Tell her don't waster her money on an expensive pool with glass walls around it at the canine rehab center. I would be afraid of that thing and besides, the lake is MUCH more fun because there are all sorts of good smells, things to eat and yucky stuff to roll in. Last time I went to the vet he said I look like a mini greyhound with all of my muscles. I don't even have greyhound (or anything similar) in me so I took it as a compliment.

Good luck getting your momma to take you out to play more often!

Swimming is brilliant!!!!
Last year I was out most of the time - first the loonie dog knocked two of my teeth out!!!!! Then I ripped one of my dew claws out - twice!!!! And to top it all.... I got diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.. and put on a ton of weight!!!!!!!!
We all go swimming in our local lake - cheaper than hydro, but swimming in the sea - mum feels - may not be so good because it is not a constant depth!!

We also do agility and mum makes us do lots of weaving to help keep our backs supple, and Lottie does spins in both directions as well to help.

Go for the hydro!!!!!

I'm NOT going to panic!!!!

Wow Grace Im sorry to hear about your injuries. Im glad your all better now though. My mama took me to the lake last weekend. It was so fun. She also took me to a physical therapist for a tune up and she told me I should swim twice a week. The only problem is the lake is 40 min away! My mama is thinking about getting me one of those portable pools. One that is big enough for me to swim in. What do you guys think? Has anyone ever tried this or have one at home?

If the lake isn't convenient and you have the space I would definately look at getting a pool. Especially over the summer you and your Mom can enjoy hours of pool play. Swimming is one of the best ways to keep your dog conditioned and especially if you have had knee problems - less stress on you.

ENJOY!

My mama went to a lot of different stores and could not find a pool deep enough for me to swim in. Does anyone have any ideas on where to find one that I fit in? I would like it to be at least 3.5 feet deep.

Thanks,
Casey

I found a pool! My mama got it from Target and it is 8 feet wide and 2.5 feet deep. It is actually deep enough for me to swim in. I love it! I think you all you pups should get one. My mama holds on to my life vest handle and makes me swim in place for about 5 min. The pool was only $45 bucks, what a steal. Check out my page for a video of me swimming.
