I have Baelin clipped about 1-2 times a year down to about 3" on his body. The groomer keeps his head/face & tail long to preserve his "Beardie-ness".
We're in So Cal, so the temperature is not too extreme. Yet, keeping the hair a few inches long keeps his temperature regulated in both the winter & summer, as well as protects him from the sun & other elements.
Also, I take him sheep herding once a week, and the shorter cut doesn't pick up as many weeds & other junk.
I do clip the small triangle of hair between his muzzle & eyes. That keeps the hair from growing up & crossing over his eyes. But, I don't cut anything else on his face. I have some Beardie pals that have their dog's "bangs" cut, and honestly, they just don't look the same. I think it takes away their "Beardie" look.
When Baelin's hair was full length, it would take me about 2.5 hours, 3 times a week, to brush him. Now, it ranges from 30 min to an hour, depending on how long since he was last clipped.
I really love the look of their long hair. Yet, the hours of grooming was starting to cause me some trouble with my shoulder/back. Also, I work full time and only have a few hours each night with Baelin. So, I was having trouble justifying spending so much of our time together doing grooming.
Now, we get our grooming done in a shorter time, and we have more time for walks, playing, training, etc.
So, in my opinion, go for a body clip down to a few inches, but leave the head & tail long/longer and don't clip much around the eyes. I have some pictures of Baelin's cut on his page.
I take him to a groomer and can get the groomer's cut directions, if you would like.
