I will be getting a golden retriever soon. He/she will be my service dog. I know you can't give me an exact amount but about how much food does a golden eat daily approximately?

It really depends what you feed and the activity level of the dog. I feed grain free and usually the kcals per cup are higher so I feed less (~2 cups) for a 75lb dog (he's on a diet as well). If you want food suggestions, just head over to the Food and Nutrition forum. Usually brands with less fillers and junk in them will result in you feeding less. 5 cups of one brand might be 2.5 of another!

has a great interactive feeding guideline section. it will figure by age, weight and the all very important and usually forgotten activity level. it also will figure for just kibble or half and half if you want to do half kibble/half canned or raw, etc... i see waaayyy too many overweight goldens!

I'm sure it does depend on the food, but I get fed twice a day. A little less than a cup of kibble, 2 teaspoons wet, 1 teaspoon plain yogurt, a few green beans, and 1 teaspoon pumpkin each feeding. I weigh 78 pounds. I get a pretty fair amount of exercise . I walk a minimum of 2 hours per day. That's just how we're doing it now, Dad keeps a close eye on my weight. Hope that helps.

I feed Moose 3 cups a day, 1 1/2 in the morning, 1 1/2 at night. It does depend on what type of food you are feeding them. I am trying to get Moose to lose some 20 pounds so the vet (and bag) told me to feed a little less than the normal amount for his hopeful size (80 pounds)

If you buy the premium dog foods you will end up feeding less because they are more nutritionally dense than regular dog food. So, for example when you buy a store brand, you may need to feed 3 cups or more depending on your golden's age and weight. But if you give him a premium brand, you may end up feed way less than 3 cups.

Hunter is 1 year old and weighs about 68 lbs. I feed him Canidae and based on the feeding guide for his weight (50-75 lbs) and age (over 6 months), I only need to give him 2-3 cups. Since he falls in the mid-range, I only give him 2 1/4 cups. Suits him fine and he is not overweight. Goldens need to be lean anyway because of the dangers of dysplasia and other health problems.
