My fatherinlaw recently got a darling black mini-dachshund. Unfortunately, it's been years since he had his last dachshund, and is rusty about housetraining. He isn't being really consistent with her. He's had her about 3 weeks now, and she's having numerous accidents in the house, regularly. Not good...but he's the one who needs to be trained, so he can train her.

I'm not as familiar with small breeds as I am with large ones, so I'm wondering...does it usually take longer for small breeds (like doxies) to be housebroken? Is it more difficult than large breeds, does anyone know, or have experience with this?

I'm trying to help him, and being subtle with suggestions, as he doesn't seem receptive to much advice. I'm stopping by there tomorrow with "The Power Of Positive Dog Training". Maybe that will help him learn.

Oh, and thank you to those who answered my previous question re: toys and crate for a doxie puppy.

Oh my! Um, dachshunds are difficult to house-train. It's likely it'll take time to get her fully trained. Smaller dogs in general do take longer to housetrain. So one necessary tool is a healthy dose of patience. wink Keep in mind that because smaller dogs have smaller bladders and puppies definitely do, she needs to go out quite often in the beginning. One tip is to not leave water out overnight but allow her to drink up before bed and before that last trip outside. Sounds cruel, but it'll help her get through the night and hopefully sleep through the night.

And tell him to invest in LOTS of Natures Miracle to clean up the accidents, the leftover smell will help encourage her to go there again, and thats not what he wants!
