A friend of mine is looking to buy a cavalier. She found apparently the only breeder in our area, which is in Reading, PA. We're in Pittsburgh. The breeder wants $1000 for a 16 week old runt of her litter. The breeder said she kept her longer hoping she would grow more but didn't. She already sold the rest of the litter for $1600 per pup with papers.

My questions are:
Is that too much for the pup? My friend just wants her as a pet, not for show.

Has anyone ever heard of them?
Charisma Cavaliers? What do you think?

Does anyone know of a rescue or other breeders in our area?

I'd appreciate any comments, concerns and opinions. I don't know enough about the breed. I already told her in my opinion it's not worth it. But is it?

To be sure if the breeder is good try contacting the Cavalier club and see if that breeder is of good standing with the Cavalier Club ( http://www.ackcsc.org/ OR http://www.ckcsc.org/ckcsc/ckcsc_inc.nsf/Founded-1954/breedhist.html ). Also find out if the breeder does healthy testing on their breeding stock. If not then i'd go else where. I wouldn't take the chance of buying an unhealthy Cavie. The breed is prone to so many medical problems that your friend would be devastated if the dog died at a premature age. But if she does want to take the chance $1,000 is very good deal for a Cavalier. Where i live in California they range from $1,200 to $1,800 from a BYB and $2,500 up to $5,000+ from a show breeder. But one of my Cavalier's came from Minnesota and he was originally purchased for $900 from a breeder. But i'm his third and last owner now. He is almost 4 years old and is in perfect health.

Princess Mia is right about the prices and breeding. $1000 is a good price for the dog IF it and it's lines have been tested for all of the health problems. In my opinion, Cavaliers are well worth their price if you can afford one. They are a wonderful breed but with all of the potential health problems your friend wants to be sure that it's a health pup.

$1000-3000 is normal. Maybe $800 if the breeder isn't looking to make a dime off the pups. Most Cavalier breeders are very picky about who their pups go to and as such, very few end up in the hands of people who breed poor-quality dogs. Look for OFA tests on at least the heart, preferably the patellas, hips, and eyes as well. Also, if they try to give you the puppy before 10 weeks, that's a red flag because since they are smaller, they benefit from a longer weaning period and more socialization with their litter. You also want to see where the dogs are raised, ask about their vetting schedule, and ask for a veterinary health certificate.
