Beware Boxer owners...Sago Palm plants, if eaten, cause immediate liver failure in dogs. We had 2 Boxers in our family eat part of the plant. Long story short and $10,000 later, one died shortly thereafter and 6 months later the other baby died of heart failure. It broke our hearts!! Any part of the plant is bad! Our vet said he sees more emergency cases from Sago Palm than any other thing.

I didn't know what this plant was either. I googled and found this article:

http://www.tonyspencer.com/2007/10/03/this-plant-will-kill-your- dog-and-maybe-your-kids/

I calmed down a bit when I read (another article) that they are native to the northeast. However, this article also says it's being sold in local stores in pots. Yikes!

What a horrible thing for your family to go through Marley. Hugs to you all. hug

They are very common here. We specified to our builders a list of plants that were not acceptable to us (I found a list a long time ago of toxic plants for dogs) but I had forgotten about the Sago Palm. Good timing for your post- I went today to look for a few new plants to replace some old ones and the Sago Palms looked so nice plus the 5 gallon ones were on sale and then I remembered your post which I read last night... thanks again for the great timing!big grinlittle angelbig grinway to go
