 | | | | That may sound like a strange question, but they do all have something in common. The White Horse is a pub and the Blue Room is a nightclub, and they can both be found in High Wycombe. There is also a great florist in High Wycombe, as well as many other businesses and landmarks. Wycombe also has another nightclub and many pubs with strange names such as Bird in Hand, The Hobgoblin, The Nags Head, The William Robert Loosley, and The Wendover Arms.
High Wycombe is more commonly known as Wycombe and is a big town in Buckinghamshire, in England. It is a combination of industry and market town, and is traditionally renowned for its furniture production. There is a market that has been held in the High Street since medieval times. High Wycombe, first known as Wicumun in 970, was a mill town throughout the Medieval and Tudor periods, when it was famous for the manufacture of linen and lace.
Apart from the well-known florist in High Wycombe, it is famous for many other reasons, such as the fact that it was the site of an old Roman villa, was also the site of a lesser English civil war and the home of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. It also played a big part during World War II when the girl's high school was used as the headquarters of the U.S. Army Air Force's 8th Air Force Bomber Command. All commands of the Royal Air Force have been housed at RAF High Wycombe since 1968.
During the 17th and 18th century, Wycombe was noted for its paper industry due to the river Wye being full of chalk which was utilised for bleaching the pulp. The paper industry took over from cloth until the 19th century when furniture factories began popping up all over town and Wycombe became famous for their furniture, specifically their chairs. To explain how important this was to the town, their football team is named the 'Chairboys' and although the industry declined drastically in the 1960s, furniture design is still an important element of the town's university, and the town is the site of the Living Chair Museum.
Modern High Wycombe now sports modern apartment buildings, a new upmarket hotel, the Buckinghamshire New University, and the Eden Shopping centre. Whether you are looking for the Sainsbury's store, a John Lewis department store, the Chilterns Centre, or a florist in High Wycombe, they are all easy to find. The Eden shopping centre which was completed in 2008 has 107 shops, including a bowling alley, restaurants, and a cinema. This complex, which was connected to the old Octagon shopping centre, has been a major part of the regeneration of Wycombe.
So, the reason why I keep on harping on about the florist in High Wycombe is that when I was visiting there I had to get some flowers urgently. I asked around for the best florist in High Wycombe, not really expecting much, but found that I got the best service that I had ever received, and I think the speediest, as the delivery was to London and I only placed the order after lunch but I received a phone call about three hours later to thank me for the beautiful flowers. Now that was really service with a smile! | | | | |
