GO!

Just had to put down my 1 and a half year old ACD, need support.

Whether a dog dies, is lost or stolen, or must be placed in a new home, this is the place to gather together to give and receive love and support when you experience the loss of a beloved dog.

Been having aggression issues with him since he was mature. I live with my fiance and her three kids and he has nipped in the past, but this morning he bit one of the girls, drew blood and possibly broke her finger. Unfortunately I had no choice but to have him put down. She needed medical treatment and i was told they would contact animal control, and if not them, her father would. Took him this morning and held him in my arms until he was asleep....was the hardest thing i have ever done and if there were any other way I would have done it. I realize it probably wasn't the best breed selection given my living conditions.....but I loved him so much....and although he had issues with people he was nothing but loving and protective of me...too much so perhaps. Still in shock, holding his collar crying. Could really use some friendly support...I realize a lot of people will probably not agree...but please understand it was either I took him and got to spend the final minutes of his life with him or he was taken away forcibly and terrified...though I still feel like I have completely betrayed him.

I'm so sorry for what you had to go through. Just know I'm thinking of you and most of us know the pain you are going through. I think losing a pet due to aggression has to be super tough too. It can be such a personal choice and you made the only choice you felt that you had. He is in a peaceful place and I'm glad you remember how sweet and loving he could be.

So sorry that you were forced to make such a difficult decision.hug It is difficult enough to make that decision with a dog who is having health problems and is a longtime friend and companion. I'm sure it is even more difficult when it is a young healthy dog with behavioral issues.cry Having only the options you were given, have him put down while in your loving arms or frightened and alone by animal control you made the right choice and did all you could. hughughughug to comfort you.

I too hope the little girl is okay.smile

Thank you all for the kind words, and the girl is okay. Going back to work today hopefully i can get my mind off of it for a bit. I am from New Jersey and I moved to Arkansas, where I live now, to be with my soon to be wife. While I am incredibly happy, I do miss my family back home and don't really have any friends here, and he was such a wonderful companion and friend. So heartbroken, especially because of how it had to go down. Some people are telling me I should get a new puppy to help me, but I feel like I owe it to him to have a sufficient amount of grieving time before I think about a new dog. Am I being irrational?

I think waiting a bit is a good idea, let you grieve some and a new puppy will require a lot of work that you may not be emotionally ready to handle just yet. Give yourself some time, I won't say how much, that's a personal time and only you will know when you're ready for a new pet.
