Well in all levels of trial, you're allowed 3 faults and still have the possibility of passing, . defecating or urinating is only a fault..

But i would keep preventing it if you can of course.. laugh out loud

Mikey almost peed once, but luckily I know his body language well when he's getting ready to pee so I was able to stop him right before he lifted his leg.

Yeah, each dog work very differently. Maluko is just a slower, but meticulous searcher while many of the other dogs in her class go totally bananas when they search. Her search is not as flashy to watch for the observers, but it's easier for me to see what she is doing and learn her body languages. It also makes it easier when the search is on leash as she is not running across the room full speed changing directions rapidly, so I can better handle her and not restrain her movement.

Ghost, I don't know what rulebook you are reading. Eliminating during a search will rack up 3 faults and 0 points for that element. So team do not pass that element and will not earn their title.

Mikey, with the higher level dogs, if they eliminate during a search, I have the handler quietly, immediately, leash them up and remove them from the search field. I let the next person go, then come back to that dog.

This is what they did in one of the seminars and I have found it to be effective. Another way to help is to set up your own searches in areas that are conducive to peeing, keep them short and sweet. Potty, quick search, potty. Teach the dog to focus on the task at hand from the start.

You're right Asher - near the end of the rule book page 22 says: 'Elimination during your search - This will result in 3 faults and 0 points for that element.'

I thought that each infraction would be 1 fault. Guess not! But what does it mean: "Non qualifying faults MAY be awarded"?? I think it's pretty clear if a dog did or didn't eliminate on the field.. shock

In our class over the summer a dog went pee on the search field and the instructor (same as this current instructor) had the person take the dog back to the car and went on with the next dog. After that dog did it's run, the offending dog came back out to do it's searches.

There's one specific area in the parking lot where we're to take our dogs to go potty.

Just a quick update.

Maluko passed Nosework ORT (Odor Recognition Test) for Anise earlier tonight while my boy Koji passed ORT for birch.

The next thing we need to focus on is getting ourselves ready for trials, but it probably will be a while because we need to practice more searching in all 4 elements, especially vehicle and exterior searches.

Maluko--I was reading my local paper, San Francisco Chronicle, on Wednesday and lo and behold, there's a paragraph from you about how you used to train your pup, to how you do it now and how you discovered it through Sophia Yin.

The article was about Sophia Yin suggesting that people get their puppies into puppy classes asap. She's written a book-"Perfect Puppy in 7 Days:How to Start Your Puppy Off Right".

As I'm reading the article I read the name Maluko and I keep saying to myself, "why do I know that name"? Then it says that Maluko is a Shiba Inu and then I knew.

So, just wanted to let ya know that your quick story made it into our paper.

Mikey,

I thought no one reads newspaper anymore. smile

I was contacted by the gal who wrote the piece today about the article. They did make a mistake of saying Maluko came to me at 8 weeks old (she came to me at 4 1/2 years old) and the author said she would talk with her editor to do a correction later.

I enjoy reading Dr. Yin's books and think they provide a great introductory overview of how dogs learn and positive training basics. It really helped us a lot when we first started to build a solid foundation.
