For those of you with the soft-sided crates, do you find that you eventually have issues with the zippers?

We were eyeing up a Guardian Gear soft crate last weekend, but oh the zippers! They also didn't have the size we wanted, and I wasn't convinced that I wanted to pay $140+tax....

We have a large metal crate (Precision) that is very secure and escape-proof, but it's proven to be a real hassle to bring to classes as it's so large. I have a hard time maneuvering it into the trunk of the car.

My one other issue is that Rexy is reactive, but she has never shown any inclination whatsoever to try to dig/claw/chew her way out of a crate. It's mainly a massive scary-bark fest and some grumbling to herself.

But now I REALLY can't get the "hamster ball" picture out of my mind...

I prefer wire crates for shows hands down, especially durring summer as the air flow is better and well I don't trust my dogs to not try to escape. I do love soft sided crates when we travel to use in hotel rooms as temporary supervised confinement though as they are much lighter and easier to deal with in a smaller vehicle or to carry when I'm tugging 50 pounds of luggage behind me.

I have never had an issue with zippers (well...actually...I broke one on the carrying case for one of the crates, but that was due to me being stupid and tugging even though I had a blanket caught in it - the crate still works just fine though). But I do have well behaved dogs when they are crated, no slamming into the mesh nor any clawing/chewing - mine just sleep when crated/penned.

I been looking for a crate too, cause the one I currently have is kind of a tight squeeve for Mag..sorry buddy! Lol he fits but I'd like one where he could stretch out a bit more. I been looking at some on Ebay. They have some good deals and sometimes free shipping..

That brings to mind another question Mag . . . I'm still not sure if I'm over doing it when I think what crate size I need for Gus . . . I keep thinking she would be most comfortable in x-large given the dimensions they usually have, but I wouldn't consider her an XL dog by any means . . .shrug

She's 22" at the shoulder, and I think like 34" from nose to base of tail (she's in a ball right now and I can't find my previous measurements . . .wink) But how much clearance do you allow? Enough for the dog to stretch as big as they can?

We take 8 dogs to an agility trial and all of them have soft crates... except Hobo who gets a wire crate. He COULD have a soft crate, but since we double stack we use his XXL wire crate to stack 2 rat terrier size crates on top of. We've tried lots of brands. I honestly like the ones I got at big lots for around 40 bucks the best, but I have Noz2Noz, Guardian Gear, Cabana Crate, Pet Gear and Backyard Pets crates. I haven't had any issues with zippers, however one of my students just had her Pet Gear zipper break after just shows. She's very upset as she is 12 and saved up her money for a long time to buy it. I have a Cabana Crate that I got in 1999 that is still useable. I find them on ebay or at trials and I've only paid full price for one. The first one. LOL Usually I'll spend 50 bucks or under for ANY size crate.

I had 8 brand new soft crates that I used for travel to a Frenchie national speciality. They worked GREAT, but when I got home I stored them in a room off my kitchen. Red squirrels came in and destroyed all but ONE of the crates. I assume they were after bits of food that might have been left in the crates?? Fortunately I had bought the inexpensive ones from Big Lots.

Well, I bought a soft crate!

I ended up getting the soft sided Tuff Crate.

Tuff Crate

I like that I am not solely relying on zippers to keep the entire thing together as this crate has a tubular metal frame that collapses down (kinda like tent poles, if that makes any sense).

I have the XL, which is about the perfect size (roomy) for 75lb Rexy.

The entire thing weighs under 10lbs and sets up in seconds. All of the windows have flaps (not the door though). And it's sturdy enough that I can't see her rolling it around.

I use a Guardian Gear soft sided collapsable crate for agility trials..
I also take a blanket (cold weather) or light sheet (warm weather) to cover it..should I need too. Fletcher seems to stay calmer if he cant see dogs going back and forth in front of his crate. smile
