I have ventured into the ring many times to get that ever elusive first CD leg in Obedience - Maggie is well trained with a very deep bond to me, but she just doesn't enjoy competing in OB as the heeling is ridiculously boring for her (and I think so as well...plus the order is the same every time minus the stays). She does love a lot of the Open and Utility exercises as I figured it doesn't hurt to train her these even though that CD is a long way off. I love seeing Maggie running up to me and doing a perfect front with a very happy finish any day of the week!

I guess it all depends on the person and the dog. I personally don't like Obedience now because I don't have a dog I am actively training in it. Rally is starting to lose it's allure as practices have been awful (so we are taking a break until the trial next month...which I already dropped a good chunk of change on)...but agility right now is holding Maggie's focus and she loves it. Sports change for dogs sometimes, yes I would love to get that RAE, but it may not be for a few years.

Looks like I should have titled this thread "Rally compared to obedience" instead wink Thanks to everyone for the input even if it sparked a little debate red face

The reason I ask about registration is Bruce isn't registered, but he could have been, they just didn't choose to when they got him (BYB cry ). So I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of the PAL, I had heard of it before where you have to take two pictures and send it in but wasn't sure exactly what that was about but now I know! I wouldn't mind having him with the mixed breeds in AKC or look for APDT trials (although there seems to be a whole bunch around where my parents live).

I read the Rally handbook and looked at the signs, they include all of them I believe. There are classes at the place I bring Sheeba, and her current instructor teaches it so she'd probably be able to give me tips. The dog training club also has Rally run-thrus every week usually, and non-members are allowed to participate so I thought that would be a good place to go to practice and watch others practicing if I opt not to talk a class. So basically I feel there are more resources around here for Rally than for Obedience.

Personally I think any dog sport builds a relationship between you and your dog. I've known Bruce for about four years now and even though I've never lived with him, he already gets more attached to females and I think we'll bond quickly. Since both Obedience and Rally seem to be pretty much low-impact dog sports (he used to be overweight which made his hips sore, and he has torn his ACL as well), that's why it comes down to those two. I really think he would love the attention and being out in public.

Based on is structure issues, you've done a great job picking out some sports for him. Have a blast!!
