Curious...what do you guys think of this? Too much weight to put stress on already strained joints, or a good idea?

Mocha that is a great question. I was thinking about getting a back pack for Joy, but I guess I am going to hold off and see what people think about this topic! I know Kip needs one for sure. big grin

To be honest... Except fot the little Brandy/Cognac barrels on St. Bernards and safety vest on Security/Police dogs... I have never seen backpacks or any other thing like it for dogs or on dogs... I really belive that the dog's back and spine is not meant to bear weight.... But I don't know... Please correct me if I am wrong...

Zeus, they do have back packs for dogs. I was going to get one for Kip. You just have to make sure the weight is equal on both sides of the dog, and there is a weight max per poundage of the dog. Does that make sense???

But as for Giant Breeds I know they make them large enough, but we don't know if it is healthy for them and their backs. Yeah know.

We are trying to figure that one out still. shrugred face

I think its okay as long as you dont overload them and have them evenly loaded. I have thought about getting them for some of my dogs but I havent had the money.

I haven't seen any research about it, but I know quite a few giant breed service dogs who wear backpacks. I can't imagine their handlers would do anything to endanger them! Just make sure the loads are balanced and not too heavy for your pup-- I think no more than 10% of their body weight but I usually only put 5% of Sabrina's body weight into her pack. But if you're concerned, talk to your vet and ask their advice!

Oh, and make sure you're getting a high quality pack that distributes the load properly!

My Mom and Dad got me a backpack to go hiking and camping. I loved it !! I wore it for many years, and never had any back or leg problems. My Mom and Dad were very careful to get a good quality backpack, and never overload it. If we were climbing up a very steep section of trail, Dad would carry it for me so I wouldn't lose my balance and fall. I guess I don't really qualify as a giant breed , but I was 100+ lbs in my prime. Hope this helps you.

I have giant breeds (pyrs) and I pack with them all the time. I don't put like 50 pounds in their bags though. Usualy I have a total of 2 to 3 liters of liquid in their packs. I split the total amount in 2 and I fill few 375 ml plastic bottles. I make sure the whole thing is balanced and we go. I the summer time I freeze the water so when we hike for a couple of hours we can have fresh water. This also help to keep my boys refreshed as the iced water touched them.
I don't think it's bad to pack with giant dogs as long as you don't over do it. I don't know how much weight 2L of water but I'm sure is not even 10% of 100+ pounds.

I wouldn't pack with giant breed dogs under 1 year though. If you do it go ahead but put like a pocket book weight in each bag never more. You don't want to strained their joints to much. Also, start slowly when packing. Not all dogs will tolerate the bags. I have started my boys in the yard with their empty bag on for a period of 10-15 min at a time a couple of times a week. Never more. Now they can pack for hours with 2L of water no problems. They even LOVE their packs. They become jumpy when I show them the packs as they know we are going for a hike!

Sabrina, Back packs do not have to be just for Service Dogs. Any dog or owner can use them, the question was are back packs ok for the GIANT breeds backs to have weight on them and their already strained joints.

Hank that makes sense. Joy is only 10 months old, and I have been thinking about it, but I bet it would be a good idea to wait until she is done growing. I wouldn't want to put any extra weight on her joints until they she is done growing. Frozen water is a good idea! I was thinking of putting a couple rocks in each side so the weight stays the same. Can you p-mail me the where you bought your packs from?? Thank you.
