Hi Everyone,

What kind of car seat/booster/restraint do you use for your little doggies in the car?

Rufio currently has a car booster seat that I got at pestmart. Sort of like this:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753864

But I think he is a little too big for it. It does say dogs up to 20 lbs but it can barely fit Rufio and he is only 7 lbs! I want him to be able to comfortably lay down but also see out the window. Also, the way I'm supposed to attach Rufios harness to the car seat does not seem very safe- it just seems like Rufio would get tangled up in the mess if there were ever to be a car accident.shrug

My friend uses that one for her cat because it likes to ride, but if it's loose, it lays on the dashboard. Outward hound works pretty well as long as you have a back seat with a head rest. I wouldn't be able to use it because I have an older car. Tiny dogs are like infants, they shouldn't be in the front seat because the air bag could hurt or kill them, and the Outward hound boosts the dog right into the firing zone of the airbag.

I prefer ones that actually sit on the chair and are buckled in by the safety restraints like this one:
http://www.dogcarseats.cc/snoozer-lookout-1-dog-car-seat.html

They're more expensive, and they don't fold away as nicely as outward hound, but they look more comfy. The big thing is that a dog can sit, turn around and lie down comfortably, the same as it is for carrier bags and kennels. I really don't like it when they have the size in weight. It doesn't describe all dogs in dimension. Imagine trying to fit an Italian greyhound's legs in the outward hound and they are well under 20 lbs.

I started out with one that had a similar design to the Outward Hound one, but Remy very quickly outgrew it.

Today, Remy uses a Snoozer and it works really well He seems very comfortable in it and we use the seatbelt adapter that's available to attach his snoozer safety vest. My only issue with the snoozer is that it's so tall that he can't get into it himself.

I have the Snoozer too. Both of my poms can ride comfortably in the small one together. Another option is the FidoRido. From my research (about 3 years ago, so there may be something more recently on the market) these are the only 2 car seat models that are accident rated. It's important for them to rely on the car's seat belt system for restraint rather than their own straps to hold it in place, which could be more likely to snap in case of an accident. The Snoozer sits about 3 inches taller than the FidoRido, which allows my dogs to be able to look out the window, which they really enjoy.

Sounds like the snoozer is the best choice! Pricy though frown

Should I invest in a different harness as well just for the car ride? (like the snoozer one), the harness he has now is just a regular thin strapped harness.

I'd definitely get him the snoozer car harness or something similar. In the case of an accident or short stop, regular harnesses may not hold up to the stress or may not spread the pressure over a large enough area of their chest.

I have a Global Pet Stow-Away Car Seat, like this:
http://www.catsplay.com/bci29988.php3

I bought it for my previous dog, he was a 23 lb terrier mix and I chose it because it was the biggest one I could find, most of the others would not fit him. I also liked it because it can convert into a dog bed. Now I have started using it for one of my cats because she gets carsick if she has to ride in a carrier.

This is a great topic! My friends think I'm silly for putting my pups in a seatbelt. I just give up explaining why. confused I have never heard of the snoozer though, and since looking at it this seems just what I need for my Cooper. She likes to see outside and the models I have seen everywhere else just don't seem well made. I also like their seatbelt.

My turn to get a car seat! cheer I'm looking at buying a car so while my dad is looking for the car I'm looking for Jewel's car seat.

I've never seen one in person before so I'm sorry if my questions are weird.

I'm looking at these three.
http://www.dogcarseats.cc/pet-gear-pet-car-seat-boosters.htm l
or
http://www.dogcarseats.cc/snoozer-lookout-2-dog-car-seat.html
or
http://www.fidorido.com/#!products

I like the fidorido because it says it has two straps, one on either side with a special harness. It also says the straps are adjustable so you can limit how much the dog moves around.

Maybe it's just the site I'm on but all the snoozer says is that it comes with a safety tether. Which isn't much info, can someone that has one tell me more?

The pet gear one says "multiple tethers".

Also Jewel has this - http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3951211&clickid= prod_cs would it work if I get one of the car seats that don't come with a harness or will that give her too much strap lenght?
