Hi,

So I'm having trouble feeding my Siberian, he's on a kibble diet of the Acana Pacifica, its a fish based food. And so far he eats it, sometimes, but the problem is he doesn't always eat. His now food has been the only one that hasn't upset his stomach, and while the vet says he's in a great lean shape, I still worry that you can feel his spine while petting him. I've been looking at raw food options to maybe do half kibble half raw. but it seems like no one does that. I was wondering if any of you have any ideas. and if the not eating some days is a sibe trait, as my friend's sibe does that too.

It is a Husky thing to fast and gorge. It's also a Husky thing to find kibble a completely unacceptable form of food.

All my guys are on raw, and are doing immeasurably better than they did on kibble. Vance just can't digest the stuff (on top of not eating it in the first place), Ember didn't eat it, Fox would eat it grudgingly and ended up gaining weight, losing fur, and getting yeast infections.

The biggest pro to going all homemade (raw or otherwise) is that you can control every aspect of your dog's food. You don't have to search for food that contains fish but not chicken or barley or whatever else they can't eat - and you completely eliminate all the extras - vitamins, preservatives, flavor enhancers - that come in kibble that can certainly aggravate their system. You will have to go slowly when you add new foods, though, to learn what does bother him and what doesn't.

Lots of people do kibble and raw, either to save money or time or both. There are topics in the raw forum about it. Really it's just a matter of learning about raw, then arranging your feeding schedule.

Denali is also on Acana Pacifica and some days he just doesn't eat. I've found that it is just a Husky trait. I used to work at a kennel and we had about 7 sibes that came there and they were all the same way. One of them actually only ate once every 3 days ever since they got her as a pup. It was just how she was and she was in good body condition and just healthy in general. Denali is also in good body condition as well. He digests the Acana well and he looks great on it, so he has been on that for quite a while now. What I have found is that he likes when we switch between the different varieties that Acana offers to mix it up a little. I avoid the chicken one though because he is allergic to chicken.

And I really wouldn't worry about him being too thin unless your vet thinks that he is. I always worried about that with Denali, but my vet assured me that he is in perfect body condition. So, my best advice would be to keep him on Acana and don't let him open bowl feed. Put his food down and leave it down for a certain amount of time (let's say 10 minutes) then take it up if he doesn't start to eat and don't give it to him until his next feeding time. This will make him realize that if he doesn't eat when you put his food down that he's gonna have to wait until later.

Good luck!
