Chain free is- the way to be!

Pepie has spent every day of the past nine years in this cage.
She is currently sixteen years old. She is a retired sled dog.
Her cage measures 10.5’ length x 3.0’ width x 3.5’ height.
Before this cage, she likely lived on a chain (as most sled dogs do).
This dog has never in her life been free.

You can see photos, learn about her medical problems,
and find local contact information to help her at my blog:
The Truth About Dogs.

Please read her story and sign the petition, write, call, etc!

Wow. What's the story behind this? I have to wonder who the "owners" are and how they ended up with a former sled dog and why they put her in a cage... Has anyone talked to these people? Are they (the owners) fighting against having her NOT in the cage?

Good grief...

Found a news article about her that answers some of the questions. Frankly, I'm still suspicious and still have questions (for instance, why is she even in a cage as opposed to a pen or run or elsewhere?) but you might be interested to read this.

Edwards says Internet story regarding dog not factual

POSTED: May 15, 2008

A story being circulated on the Internet about an abused dog in the city of Dunkirk caught the attention of Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards, who then looked into the matter concerning a dog named Peppy.

According to Edwards, the story on the Internet is not factual and Peppy is doing well in her retirement.

“My assistant spoke directly with the director of our Humane Society, who has not only checked on this dog but has received confirmation that this dog is walked on a daily basis and confirmed with the dog's veterinarian that the dog is well cared for, in as good a condition that a 16-year-old Husky could be, is of the proper weight, the feet are in good shape and the dog has been receiving prescription drugs and a supplement to deal with the onset of arthritis,” Edwards said in a press release.

Edwards went on to say Peppy has had but one owner in her adult life and competed as a sled dog until that was no longer possible.

“When I personally visited the owner and his dog (Tuesday) he showed me the Scotts kennel that consisted not only of the mesh area but an insulated dog kennel where the dog was sleeping when I arrived,” Edwards said. “I have many more facts, but rest assured that my office, the Humane Society and other officials take issues like this very seriously and the dog is not being mistreated in any way, shape or form.

“Unfortunately, someone has taken ... to misrepresent the situation and now the owner has been receiving death threats, drive-by harassment and abuse that is totally inappropriate.”

I received that before it was even published. The photos don't lie, and that dog is living in that horrific enclosure and suffering. I've actually contacted NYS Ag & Mkts to have the humane society looked into, because they are not doing their job (the investigator could EASILY require different shelter for the dog using the NYS Shelter Law - but he refuses and calls the chithole she lives in adequate) and the whole situation is just extremely fishy from the legal side of things. If you read the petfinder forum articles about this and the yahoo group, you will learn quite a bit more about the situation from neighbors and people actually living in the town.

Windy, I am by NO MEANS defending this. I'm was just posting what the article said. After all, there are two sides to every story (actually there are often a lot more than two!). I still don't understand what the owner's reasoning is for having her in a cage. Also, if she was a sled dog and the guy has had her all her life, did he used to run her? Does he have other dogs and, if so, how are they kept?

Which Yahoo group is this being discussed on? I can't seem to find it through the blog.

Keep us posted!

Windy, why have you not posted what you have been told by the shelter et al. to the yahoo group?

And the first time I saw you on the yahoo thread, and when you started the AOL thread was on the 15th, the day this message came out.

I am sorry, but it appears to me you are trying to take credit for the efforts of other people who have been hard at work trying to help this dog.

Link to the yahoo thread, not your blog, if you want to direct people to the best source of info. I am not saying you are not trying to help, but it is concerning that the only info you provide links to YOUR page, not the best, most accurate, most up to date Yahoo message board.

Good lord. People who are actually involved with rescue and investigation offline do not always plaster everything all over the internet. Many people have called the executive director, and I was given basically the same spiel they were. Why post to say "yup same here"? Many of us are working behind the scenes, away from the blatant publicity of the internet, to attempt to help this dog. Forgive me for not updating every single internet forum/list I put this alert out to with the exact same message every time. My blog site has actually been a main link from the petition site and other forums because it contains all of the contact information and photos in one place and is well put together. I was ASKED to have my site linked, I did not request it. People need to get over themselves and start focusing on the dog. In all honesty, since getting involved, I have pretty much switched to e-mail and phone call conversation because plastering stuff all over the internet is not always best. If you want to get involved and know more, CALL SOMEONE!

I brought this up because you posted minimal information everywhere you began a topic about this - a link to a a million "contacts" means nothing when you have no idea what to say to them or what has already BEEN said - further, your petition was brought up on the yahoo site, but the poster said it does not have the full story, and was doubtful about recommending it.

So you spoke with both the shelter director and the neighbors, right? I would post that you spoke with them and they said the same thing. From what I saw in the yahoo thread, hardly anyone actually SPOKE with the shelter director, and only a few spoke to the neighbors.

I am sure they would want to know what the neighbors said, and even if the shelter director said the same thing to you, let them know! Even getting in contact with those people is important to know.

When you want people to help, you TELL them the deal, you do not give them links to other discussion and tell them to call the shelter director. Your post in the other dogster thread, when I asked for more info, said:

"you can just call the humane society and speak to the executive director as I and many others have done. I have also talked to neighbors."

I know you want to help - I think the way your post on the AOL board turned sour is something you should pay attention to. When you are evasive, unhelpful, imploite and resentful of people wishing to verify a story you are hurting the chances of the dogs you are trying to help.

I will say it what I have said before - you are going to be your own worse enemy in your efforts to help these dogs if you are unable to put aside your anger at humanity long enough to see that people need to be treated well, too, if you want them to have any desire to help you.
