I may have Cushings Disease. I understand it is not a death sentence these days, but if anyone out there has any experience I'd love to hear from you.

And my momma would like to hear things like huskies living to be 14+ with cushings.. maybe 16+

Heck I am only a little over 9 years old, I'd like to hear I am just middle aged!!!

I don't have it, but last year the vet thought I might because of some elevated levels of something or another. And one of my friends, Zuni, was also told that he may have it, but didn't.

I can't offer any advice about having it, but I can say to be sure your vet does all the testing needed to definitively diagnose it and determine its cause before thinking about the treatments. Depending on what causes it, you may need surgery or just meds or a combination. So definitely be sure you have it first before going there!

Good luck!

dear Nika,

i don't know anything about Cushings, but do know a thing or two about fighting a lifelong disease - cancer.

they key is to stay focused, learn everything you can and make sure you're being treated by the best of the best specialist in their field with the newest, most upto date knowledge and equipment.

lastly and most important, it is with you and your owner's bond that will be the biggest factor in helping you through this. i attribute Luc to be at least 60% responsible why i'm still around today. so you'll be okay too. just hang in there and fight hard.

hug

You will be OK! I do not know much about it in dogs, but in horses it is a very managable condition.

As our babies get older, they start getting creeky.... Kiona is on thyroid meds and hormonal meds everyday because of an inactive thyroid and incontience. She is doing great on them, it is just rountine for eveyone to get their meds in the morning. I go in every 3 months and get a $40 test to make sure all her "levels" are where we want them at, and that is it.

Non lethal, lifelong diseases affect many humans and dogs, and the key is to take it one day at a time, appreciate every minute you have, and do the best job you can keeping mind and body healthy, both with western and eastern methods, IMO.

Luc, I think about your owner often... I read your page right when I first joined Dogster, and was so moved.... and so impressed. I hope everything is in remission and you are doing well - you have a fan in Gainesville, FL!

Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida wink my mom's alive and kicking.

That is wonderful, Luc!

I spent my teenage years in Ponte Vedra Beach, which is east of Jacksonville, and I know how good the Mayo clinic is there. Now I live in Gainesville and we have Shands here.... lots 'o good hospitals in Florida!!

I am so glad you are in remission. So glad.

Hi Aspen!

Thank you for asking! Actually Nika had a urine test done this past week and the plan was that based on that test we would either go in the direction of testing more for cushings or testing more for some sort of mass in the liver. Well the urine test came back great except the one thing in particular for Cushings the "specific gravity" was on the low side of normal. The vet is still thinking early stages of Cushings. So she is scheduled for this Tuesday for her next test. She gets dropped off in the am. Then they do testing throughout the day.

There is something going on.. just a matter of what. I just hope we find out soon.. and whatever it is is manageable and we can then manage it and help ensure Nika has MANY MANY years to come.

Sorry I haven't posted sooner it sort of has been a crazy time between Nika and also Rudi got rechecked for his leg (doing good).. just another 8 weeks of restricted activity. Mom's 60th birthday party on Saturday.. and in between all that frankly I have been forcing Nika to cuddlesmile Please keep the good thoughts coming.

Thanks, Paige

That's exactly what prompted our vet to check Leah for Cushings, and the advanced tests came back negative. I think it's like people - their levels go up and down all day and if they don't do a first-am or fasting urine test, the results can get all whacky (Leah had the first urine test in the late afternoon).

Hope you see the same thing - best of luck!!
