Hi Anniewave

We keep Meisha in long coat. If you read her Bio, she is from 2 Champion Show Dogs, and they are the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen. Although Meisha won't be a show dog, she is the spokesdog for our Puppy Spa business, so I want her in show condition. Be aware that Annie is going to go through a coat change anywhere from 8 to 11 months. Her hair will matt just sitting and looking at it, LOL. If you keep her in long coat, she must be brushed and then fully combed at least once a day. I know this sounds like a lot of time, but Meisha spends about 10 minutes on the table a day, and then a quick brush before she heads to bed. Surely we have that amount of time to spend on our dog each day? Get her off the floor, and onto an elevated table, washer and dryer or cabinet with a bathmatt under her to stop the slipping factor. She will associate the elevated area as a serious place, and the floor with playtime.

If you keep Annie in long coat, make sure she is kept in air conditioning unless going out to potty. Make sure the air conditioner is on her in the car. It doesn't have to be ice cold, but make sure she is comfortable.

I can sure stay in contact with you, and help you through the process. I can't tell you the amount of people that have just gone nuts over Meisha. I have people coming into the Spa just to see Meisha, and show their kids, .... and they aren't even customers. How they have heard about her, I don't know????

I believe in keeping true to the breed, and keeping them the way they are supposed to look. I cut shih tzu's hair short every day, and they are still the cutiest breed going. Keep in mind that when you cut a coat, it is hard on the hair and on the skin. Don't ever let someone expose Annie's skin, because this can cause sun burn and cause skin cancer. I wouldn't ever take the coat below an inch.

No matter what you do with the coat, it is very important to keep the eyesight clear of hair. Leaving hair in the eyes can cause shadows in their eyesight even when it is trimmed back after it being there a while. This was told to me by a very good vet, and I can see what she means.

If you keep her in long coat, let me know, and I will send you a very nice barrette for her topknot. You will always want to keep that up, and I make some pretty cool ones.

Good luck, and let me know if I can help you.

My mom keeps my hair short. She let it grow out over the winter, but mats seemed to pop up no matter how much brushing I sat through. So short's the way to go for me. I'll just have a jacket for venturing outside in the winter.

Right now Bingley just has his puppy coat, so he hasn't been trimmed but for his face and tooshie. I think I'll let it keep growing for the winter months, and get it short-ish for next summer. I don't want it too short, though, since I think he looks cute with it a little fluffy.

Mom trims me herself and keeps me fluffy but not too long. She keeps my tail short and my ears short too so I always stay looking like a puppy. Of course this requires daily or every other day combing out and she's always trimming around my eyes because I tend to get hair in them. Once or twice a year she takes me to a professional groomer and gets me cut short. I hate going to the groomer!

I always kept Yoshi's hair cut short. She seemed happier that way - when it was long she would mope around, and as soon as it was cut it was as if she was full of life and young again.

After 2 years of dealing with impatient, cruel, and crabby dog groomers (unfortunatly I couldn't find a good one locally) I invested in clippers and did it myself. It can be tricky at first - learning for yourself, as well as teaching your dog proper 'grooming manners'.

We went from 3 hours (with ALOT of breaks! she was traumatized from the last groomer) when I first started, down to 45 minutes every 6-8 weeks. It's not too bad - it just becomes part of your life!

My mom keeps my coat long - it has never been cut and I will be 2 years old in January. She brushes and combs me 2 times a day, and I just love the attention. I sit on the bed and let her brush me and change the bow on my topknot. I go to the groomer twice a month for a bath and combout. I never have knots, and look just beautiful.

The daily combing gives me the extra pampering I love.

I usually keep Loulee's hair short, especially in the summer when it's so hot. Sometimes I'll let it a tad longer in the winter. But Loulee's hair came out different, it's very wavy. The vet said there must have been a poodle somewhere in the family tree and she got the gene. Thus making long hair for her almost impossible to keep up with.
