Blackening skin? Vet says "allergies", but I'm skeptical.

PLAYTIME is MY-a- time!

Hi Saki and Flynn,

Mya has atopic dermatitis- otherwise known as severe dermatological allergic reaction to unknown stimuli. My vet thinks it's grain, and I think it's environmental- maybe both.

Although she almost has her full coat back (Thanks, Dogsters, for the advice, specially Winnie's mom) but Mya has some black spots now. Her skin is very itchy, but since she has alot of dandruff falling off from the black spots, now I kind of realized that her skin is very dry. I'm putting her back on Vit. E supplements and Fish Oil supplements (which I stopped because of some kidney issues).

Topically applying virgin coconut oil as soon as I notice red dry spots seems to help, as she has not had any open wound from scratching in months. It's a lot of trouble though as she is too intrested in drinking the coconut oil from my palm.

Some breeds have this genetic disease going on in some lines, called black skin syndrome, namely, pomeranians, but I highly doubt that's what you're facing.

Good luck to us on all our derma issues!

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, guys. They're both exhibiting the darkness on their stomachs and between their toes now. The area around Saki's lady parts has gotten particularly dark. The vet thinks it's a grass allergy because of the location of the skin darkening. The smell has gone, and they don't seem to be scratching as much, but it's winter and most of the grass is dead. The allergy meds were not helping at all, so I discontinued them after 2 months. No sense in giving them unnecessary meds, right? They no longer seem uncomfortable, and the only licking they do is the typical shiba grooming.

In terms of food, Saki and Watson are now raw-fed. They eat primarily beef and fish protein, as I was trying to rule out a chicken allergy. They do, occasionally, get a chicken thigh as a treat. Their organ meats are coming from a stockpile of deer guts my relatives have given us. Sometimes they get a frozen "meatball" of ground beef, beef liver, kidney, and pumpkin puree, if we're in a rush and need something quick. Yogurt, cottage cheese, and parmesan cheese are mixed in periodically, as well as a doggie multi-vitamin and probiotic brewers yeast supplement. All their treats are home-made and grain-free. I did try giving them red wine vinegar for a while, but they hated the smell.

I read Winnie's mom's blog, and I remember comparing their issues to Kona's. it's NOWHERE near as severe, and it doesn't really look the same. Neither of them has any hair loss. Their skin was pink when they were puppies, and now it's just started to darken. It doesn't look thickened or anything, more like they're dirty, even when they're not. It's almost like looking at "flea dirt," but neither of them has fleas.

It looks Kind of like this

but without as much redness or irritation, and it's less splotchy.

The picture above is not my dog. I'd post a picture of their actual bellies, but my camera was KIA at Disney World frown

Hi there,

We have an appointment with an animal dermatologist in a couple of weeks, very expensive. I will update everyone after wards. I want answers, not just treating the symptoms. My poor little guy is miserable. We live in a high rise in the city so I want him tested for all allergens. Not guess work! For as much money as this is going to cost, I really want answers.

Rocko my 5 year old Shiba has been to the vet for the last 6 months with itchy paws stomach and behind. His skin is turning black and he smells like a beer factory. He has had two rounds of yeast medication and four rounds of steriods. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to stop the maddness. The dermatologists wants $500 just to look at him! Ouch

Sorry about this. frown What is he currently eating? Has there been any test to see if it's environmental or food like a food trial?

Saya eats raw diet so she does fine, but she does get some goop in her eyes during high pollen season especially when farmers do their work..

She gets better once pollen and farm stuff is done she hasn't had yeast or skin issues though. :

Maybe post this in dogster health if you don't get a response her.
