New to dogster, so first off - Hello!

Ronin is about 4 months old now, and still enjoys playing a bit rough. Any ideas or methods you've found effective for stopping the biting???

I know he's still young and going through teething, Will he stop as he gets older? I've been standing up and walking away when he bites, like "Play time is over when you bite!" Sometimes it seems to work, others not really.

Help!

Hi Roninwave

Getting up and walking away is good. You might also try redirecting that biting to something more appropriate like one of his toys. The little guy is teething after all, and mouthiness is just par for the course.

Yes it will get much better once he is done teething. Hang in there.

Hi cutie! Welcome to the forum~

One of the things we did with Winnie during the mouthy puppy stages was to put some peanut butter on our hands and say the word "gentle" or "kisses". And everytime she'd lick gently, we'd praise her. If she even scraped a tooth against the skin, we'd pull away and say "AH- AH".

Eventually, she'd associate our hands as something she shouldn't nip and we would correct her if she did by saying "AH AH - Gentle"....

Shibas are pretty mouthy dogs and the nippy behaviour can sometimes get worse if you don't work to correct it early on. Good luck!

First, wave welcome to the forum.

With our pups. we redirected the biting to licking by offering them a flat palm and saying lick. Winnie's peanut butter idea would probably speed up the process, but we did it without. Just remember to praise the right behavior when you get it. One nice thing about Shibas is that they have a tongue that is nice and not repulsive. wink

Since you are just getting started on your Shiba journey, I'll give you a little advice so you don't have to learn it the hard way. Shiba's are very smart and very cute. Don't let their cuteness lure you into rewarding unwanted behavior. confused These little guys need a lot of interaction with a strong pack leader and if you can do that, you will have a wonderful friend.

There is tons of information on this forum, because we all think so highly of the Shiba Inu. way to go
