Eponine,
It's unfortunate and very, very, sad but alot of dogs get "thrown away" for being old,or sickly. When I volunteered at our local shelter those were the two most common reasons for owner surrender. There was the I don't want to have to decide wether he/she should be euthanized. Then there was the he/she is sick and I don't have the time/money to deal with the vet.My other favorite is we just got a new puppy and the old dog doesn't like it. Some people just suck!!Makes you wonder why they get a dog at all.Apparently it doesn't matter what social class you come from you can still be an A$$834e

Aww poor dogs! That's horrible.

On the plus side, at least they shouldn't have too much trouble finding a home since he's a movie star. Unlike most of the homeless, big, black dogs confused

This article says they used Deerhounds from one breeder for the dog in both the 3rd and 5th movies:

So where does this GSD come in? thinking

I was confused too. I was 98% sure the dog in the 3rd movie was completely digital. And he certainly doesn't look like a long-coated GSD either.

The dog used in the 5th movie was a Scottish deerhound.

Agree with Bianca and Risa...almost made me wonder if they made it up to get him adopted? But I hate to accuse of that without really knowing more. The dog in the movie photo is most definitely not that GSD though.

My thought is that they attached sensors to the dog and filmed some motion on a green screen to create a digital dog they could make look fierce and feral and give human-esque expressions without sacrificing realistic motion. This is how the character Gollum was created in the Lord of the Rings series. It's the only way my mind can conceive that lovely elderly Shepherd in the same thought as that obviously CGI shaggy nondescript in the screenshot. I've not seen the films though so this is only a guess.

Considering the special effects budget they must have had I don't doubt it much though.

I was about to say, thinking back to the movies, I don't ever remember a black GSD...the only thing I can think of is they attached CGI sensors to the dog and so it wasn't so difficult to make the movements look realistic.

Regardless, I hope the poor pup gets a good home. frown If its really padfoot I'm sure there are lots of people who would pay THOUSANDS to have him, if not millions...

Which also makes me hope this isn't some scheme by the shelter to make money...
