Good luck in your new adventure! I'm on foster dog #4 in about 3 years time. It can be frustrating, exciting, hectic, rewarding and downright sad sometimes. But the best experience ever and I plan on doing it for many years to come. way to go

This is something I am considering doing once I get a place of my own and it makes me happy to hear that there is hope for people who currently own intact dogs to do so. Probably within the next 5 years I'll be able to do this.

Agreed - yay for hounds! I saw a GORGEOUS coonhound mix there. He was tall like a Dane, but really slender and sleek and had the coonhound face, tail, ears and markings. Black and tan. And the entire time, he was walking around in a perfect heel with his foster, minding his own business and soooo well behaved. He whined at other dogs a few times, but he was fantastic and I wanted to take him home. SO BADLY.

We were also very happy to see our dogs were so quiet and well behaved in comparison to two of the other rescues. One had a dog up for adoption that was behind held by a guy around my age and it was snarling, baring its teeth and quite literally attacking his hands and arms. It wasn't drawing blood but isn't that a liability to the rescue? I was quite surprised. After that attack and everyone staring, I didn't see the dog again. I think they took it home or something.

I'm trying to find out which rescue that Coonhound was in to find out more info about him.

And I couldn't help but go with Beagles. The Beagles that were there were some of the most relaxed dogs and they were handling the busy, crazy environment with ease. I love their personalities too. So sweet.

And Samson, yes, there is hope for us with intact dogs to foster! When you're ready, I'd contact a few and see if they would be willing to allow you to foster dogs that are already fixed. That's what I did. smile

Be careful!

Once you have a coonie....there isn't anything like them! I mean, I went from one to 'hmm, maybe a second dog', to 'oh! a second coonie!' in 3 months time. laugh out loud

Really, any dog you foster will be super lucky!

Haha, I couldn't figure out what rescue he was with, unfortunately. Hopefully I'll see him at another adoption event and can get more info then. But I loved his lean, sleek look, tall body, and coon head and ears. Soooo gorgeous and he was so well behaved!

I may end up fostering Beau, a red and white Beagle who has lashed out at his foster mom twice and she's now uncomfortable with him in her home because she has no experience with this. According to her though, it's been mainly regarding food or pulling him off furniture. I can keep him tethered to me, so not on furniture, and I can hand feed(which he's fine with) and I will have the help and guidance of their behaviorist which just makes things all the better. I have the experience with dogs like that, with using positive reinforcement to change it and it was Beau I fell in love with at the event, lol! He's gorgeous and a sweetie pie when he's not lashing out and I think it would be great experience towards my future careers.

That said, he was apparently in a foster home for a week before he was adopted out and then he was returned to them a week later with aggression issues. One of the foster parents had seen the adoptive parent raise his hand to Beau and believes he was being mistreated and mishandled and that's where the aggression may have stemmed from, but it could also have been just a series of bad experiences too. He's one of the Beagles from Newfoundland where they use the dogs for hunting and keep them tethered outside, etc.

Now just to make sure him and Charlie are fine together. They should be. Beau is one of those quiet, relaxed dogs who just likes to sit and get pet. He's great on a leash too. And if I have any issues while fostering him, they're willing to swap dogs with me, or try and work things out which is cool with me too. So I'm hoping I can provide a good foster home for Beau while he works out his issues. Charlie's a really good role model when it comes to things like that too because he's so relaxed and will do whatever I say without hesitation, because he knows good things come of it.
