I agree with Kaiser. Ellen had no business "crying" on TV. What she has done to this organization is horrific. I shop at their store; I've seen their dogs. The rescue group is no different than any other in terms of invoking this rule. I'm so tired of self-absorbed celebrities beleiveing they are special. Ellen has dragged their good name through the mud. Ellen should be ashamed of herself for exploiting this on her show. Ellen owes the rescue group an apology.

Reminder to the poster who applauded Ellen for keeping her cats...Ellen spent less than two wks with the new dog. Some how in her huge home (and yes it is huge)...she cldn't find a way to peacefully introduce older cats to a younger dog? Come on.
She did NOTHING noble in keeping her cats. She is supposed to keep her cats; she has a live time committment to them. The same committment she made when she adopted the dog.
Did Ellen use her tv show for self-congratulations for adopting a shelter dog a month ago? Yes. Did she mention that she dumped the little guy a mere two weeks later? No. And now she uses her television show once again to look like a well-intended pet loving person. Gee....not to loving if you are a young dog that wants to play and have attention and requires training.

Why couldn't the rescue organization start adoption paper work with the new family?! Heck, make Ellen pay the second adoption fee (as her punishment).

I thought the rescue group was very heavy handed - and did not need to get to that level!

Everyone wants what's best for the dog. They should put aside petty quibbling and compromise.

Merlin, I had no idea we were just talking about "small dogs" I thought we were talking about dogs in general. I understand not giving a 3lb chi to someone with young kids.

way to go

Pugsley, we will usually make exceptions for well behaved children and larger poms, but I have had an applicant call me on the phone and curse me out for choosing another family for a 5 lb pommy. She told me her 2 year old was very graceful, so there was no chance she could hurt our little pommy (who was recovering from being dumped in a shelter with a broken leg). After this, I am thinking maybe the exceptions should stop because they could be held against us in the future.

Guys, Ellen broke a legal contract and the rescue did was was the right thing to do: to remove the dog from a family that was not approved to keep this dog.
Wether you think the under 14 year rule is good or bad, it is the rescues rule. Period. Ellen kept the dog fro two weeks. That is ridiculous! If you give up on an animal after 14 days you should have never gotten it in the first place (mind you we are not talking about any dangerous/aggressive behaviour). Ellen loves animals yet she is trashing a rescues reputation because of her screw up.
The damage she's done to all rescues is much worse than taking a dog away from two kids.

I think almost everything that I have to say about this has been said.
I have a small dog, and she is GREAT with small children. I really don't think anyone can generalize and say that every small dog and every small child are not compatible. A rescue should definetly interview familes with small children to see if they are suitable or not...every case should be dealt with individually. Not generalised.

Some breeders also have similar "return" policies. I am pretty sure that the contract that I signed upon purchasing Rudy states that if we can no longer care for her, that she be returned to the kennel and they would either keep her or find her a new home. I have even seen other kennels who profess that there will be a "fine" if they were to find out the dog has been put in a shelter or given away without the kennels permission. So I agree, Ellen should have called and things would have gone smoother and this whole situation could have been avoided. She made a mistake, but I think the rescue over reacted an exploited that mistake. I don't think Ellen was unfair to go on her show and tell her story. The rescue went to the media with their story, it was fair game as far as I am concerned, and Ellen was genuinely upset which is why she was crying about it. I just think things could have turned out differently.

I also heard that the other reason they took the dog away was that Ellen's name was not registered to the microchip therefore they couldn't prove it was hers. Yeah, there are definetly pieces missing to this story. I hope it all ends well!

ya Merlin, it is the people like that who make exceptions so hard to make.

I had one lady try to vilify the rescue I was working with at the time because we would not give her the dog she and her kids "loved".

The dog had aggression issues and her children were 12 and 9. We told her that the dog had a bite history and therefore would only be adopted out into approved adult only homes. But no, she wanted THAT DOG!!. She tried and tried to cajole me into approving her application, when I finally was as clear as I possibly could be and told her "This dog WILL NOT BE ADOPTED INTO YOUR HOME" She went off her rocker and started bashing the rescue on another web based canine chat site. Luckily I was there to give the other side of the story because people were supporting her until they found out he aggression problems the dog had, then they changed their tune to "Why would you adopt a dog you were told would bite your kids??"

Rudy, the rescue didn't go to the media until AFTER Ellen trashed them. Then they were only defending their position. I believe anyone else would do the same if they were given death threats by crazed fans. Bottom line is...Ellen and Portia messed up. Ellen and Portia are solely to blame for this mess.

On a happier note...I'm glad the dog was adopted to a different home. Hopefully it will be forever.

In addition, if you read the transcript of the call that Ellen publicist made to the rescue, they threatened to go public first. I have to admit, were I in M&Ms position, there is no force on earth that would now convince me to give the dog to Ellen's hairdresser.
