Woof - We'd love to share this portion of Dogster with you, but first you'll need to login.
If you don't have a Dogster account yet, you can register in about 60 seconds. Registering allows you to use all our free features while allowing us to create a safer, more meaningful environment for the community as a whole.
Registering is fast, free and lets you create your dog page(s), find adoptable dogs, save your favorites, connect to your Pup Pals and more.
Because Dogster thinks the world of rescuers, this is a special place for to discuss shelters, rescue organizations, rescue strategies, issues, solutions, etc. and how we can all help in this critical endeavor. If you are interested in fostering for one of these great organizations or on your own, here's the place to seek friendly advice. We also welcome shelters and rescue organizations to post here about dogs looking for foster homes but we recommend that you put your location in the topic of your thread so those close by can find you!
Help us Make the Best Adoption/Rescue Site on the Web
my rescue is a national rescue, with each state working as a seaprate entity within the national system. it would be wonderful if we could make a separate page, with special, desstinctive and different colors, jst like harry winston said, for each state's branch of the group, with links to all of our adoptable dogs available. it would also be nice to have a link to our adoption application on each of our dogs pages, so that they could be sent dierectly to that, or at least on our rescue's main page. it might also be nice to have a list of dogs adopted through dogster on our shelters main page too, to help people see just how sucessful it has been! i know that i have gotten several dogs adopted through dogster, and my state coordinator believes in it so much that she's gotten the westchester aspca to post adoptable dogs on dogster too! if we could make this site even better, it would be much to the benefit of many animals.
This might have been said before, but there needs to be something to show how far away they're willing to adopt. Some people only want families in their own town, some will travel or allow transport.
perhaps you could spotlight certain dogs each week. it can be the most urgent, or purebred, or good old mutts, or the sweet senior dogs. might also want to include katrina dogs still looking for homes. I have been working with petfinder since the storm, it is amazing that we are still finding katrina pets in shelters or foster homes. some of which were never posted on petfinder. I think the adoption pages is a great idea. just needs to be promoted so everyone knows. perhaps across the top of the page ( where it says home, add a dog, my account, etc) there could be one that says adopt , give me a home, find a new friend, something like that.
It's hard for me to even begin typing how amazing this is.
I hope you know we've been thinking about this hard and long, since about 1 week after the site launched and first adoptable dog was posted. We've been dreaming for years how we would do it if and when we could.
But to stop and read these. One after another. Long, thought out and detailed or quickly added, it confirms many of our deepest hopes about what we thought would be the best and pushing us to make it that much better. We literally love every single suggestion made here and are really focused on making this happen sooner then later.
We've also got some other tricks up our sleeve to get the word out and draw in adopting parents at massive levels =)
In a couple days you'll see a new Adoption Search form. Just ignore it. It's much better then our current search, but not in any way what our real upgrades will be. The upgrades are just going to take a couple months and we just want to get something, even 10% better on the site.
With the new " adoption forum" is DOGSTER going to stop all posts and threads of allowing backyard / irresposible breedings? To have or allow both sorta defeats the purpose of the adoption forum. If you are trying to help rescues / adoptables... to allow non registered irresponsible breeders to brag / want to know how etc. just adds to the shelters / rescues of unwanted / abused dogs / puppies.
How about you start a new thread about your question of the use of our forums so this one doesn't get sidetracked?
The short answer is that Dogster and Catster in no way support, condone , allow bad/unethical/unloving breeding. If you ever see any conversation that in any way support, endorse, promotes unloving breeding, please click the notify link and we'll look into it.
If you'd like to discuss further please just start a new thread or you can contact me directly at www.dogster.com/dogs/189.
Way to go Dogster.
I am a frequently on Petfinder, always keeping my eye out for another dog that would fit with us, I sometimes do become overwhelmed though to the point of tears with it all. I have searched the current Dogster “adoptable pets” and actually have responded to a couple and received no response back, I just assume they are outdated.
I think the search features on Petfinder are verygood(by breed/size/age/location/etc). Some rescues/shelters post a lot of information(*adoption range/housetrained/ dog friendly/ etc.) while others do not.
How about a formal collaboration between Dogster and Petfinder? Is that a possibility? A link between the (2) sites. For those who do not already have a dog and are looking to take the shelter route, what will draw them to Dogster? Once someone has adopted a Dog, Dogster is a great place to be, to learn, get advice, support etc.
Just brainstorming here, but offer a free Dogster Plus to anyone who adopts from Petfinder. You know that kind of thing. Not a competition between the (2) sites but joining forces.
I'd like to second the desire for search options that other Dogsters have posted. Often times, our shelter gets communications looking for specific age ranges and breeds so having more options on that front would be very helpful. I also think it would be great to be able to search for animals that are special needs, good with kids, good with other animals, etc. But the one thing that I haven't seen done successfully on any site (probably because it will be difficult to do) is search by PERSONALITY. Our shelter actually gets a lot of people looking for a particular characteristic (i.e. lap cat, playful, independent, friend for current pet (i.e. prefers other animals over people), etc.). Alternately, others are really looking for those who need TLC - those animals that won't draw the "traditional" adopters' eyes right away. Being able to search for based on these 'personality-based' parameters would be a great resource that would make the Dogster/Catster communities more competitive with PetFinder (or perhaps the partnership another member suggested could make both a force of nature). We're psyched to see how this new feature progresses. Bark on!

Hey Ted. One way that can help shelters, rescue & fostering is if they go to goodsearach.com and place or find a rescue that is already listed. The more you search the more the group gets money. For every search the group gets 1 cent. Now how easy is that!. Lets save a life, we have 3 rescues in our pack. Woof Woof!
