Tax deductions for psychiatric service dogs?

The Service and Therapy Dog forum is for all service and therapy dogs regardless of whether or not their status is legally defined by federal or state law, how they are trained, or whether or not they are "certified." Posts questioning or disputing a person's need for a service or therapy dog, the validity of a person's service or therapy dog, or the dog's ability to do the work of a service or therapy dog are not permitted in this forum. Please keep discussions fun, friendly, and helpful at all times.

Now that the ADA has recognized PSDs as service dogs, can they and the money you spend for their care be a tax deduction? I am thinking that it would be under medical expenses not reimbursed.

Any advice will be appreciated!

It's my understanding that the costs for any service dog can be deducted like any other medical expense.

I think you can only do it, if you have a mobility or guide dog...but I could be wrong. I know I read it somewhere, I'm guessing the IRS website. I'll look around again & see if I can find it.

From what I can understand off the IRS website it covers any service dog. Your best bet is to consult a tax professional about this though, they are able to give you the most accurate information.

Here's a link to the IRS site: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html#en_US_2012_publink100 0178936

Unfortunately, it looks like it only applies to dogs for people with visual impairments, hearing impairments, and physical disabilities. I wonder why they don't include those with psychiatric disabilities?
