I just wanted to let everyone know that Samson got bloat last night at around 10.

I rushed him to the ER as fast as I could and they rushed him to the back. While they were stabilizing him the doctor told us that it would be $6000 to do the surgery and there was a 60/40 chance for his survival. Samson has given me his all so I had to do it and pay for the surgery. He went into surgery and three hours later the doctor came out to let us know how it went.

She said the stomach had twisted so they fixed it, tacked it, flushed his stomach, and removed his spleen since many blood vessels had burst. I was able to go in to say goodnight to him and he looked pitiful but I was so happy to see him alive.

This morning I went to visit him again. He was on pain meds so he was very sleepy but his eyes lit up when I kissed him and spoke to him. He wanted so badly to come with me but I told him he needs to stay there and recover.

The doctor said he's doing very well all things considered and we'll know if he's going to make it the next few days. Please keep him in your prayers.

Oh no! Poor Samson. Poor you. I know just how you feel - I had three different dogs bloat in the space of about a year. I was very lucky and all of mine made it. But it sounds like Samson is doing terrific so far. Don't get me wrong, there *is* still risk from cardiac arrhythmia at this point but he's made it through the worst.

Please keep us posted. Bloat absolutely STINKS.

Oh no! Bloat is scarry stuff. I feel like that surgery price is a bit high though, my aunt only paid $4000 for it when her dog bloated. Perhaps set up a chipin account to help recover some of your loses since Samson with surely need more supportive care in the days to come. I'm pretty broke but I'd help out what I could for your boy. Keeping you both in our thoughts and prayers. Xoxo

Arizona-

That the was mid price quoted for the stabilization, surgery, hospitalization, and supportive care. It can be more or less depending on what they need to do the next few days. They will refund/charge me the difference if it ends up being less/more. Thank you for the support!

Samson's price is also going to be higher because the vet is keeping him hospitalized for the next few days. My dogs were all sent home the next day after surgery. In their cases surgery ran about +/- $2000 but that was in 1998-1999 so of course it would be more expensive now.

NoNameYet-

They want to keep him until at least Tuesday. The price they gave was including hospitalization until Tuesday, the price will go up if he can't tolerate oral meds and they have to give him pain med injections which are $37 every injection. I don't care what the price is though, Samson does not have a price tag and I'm concentrating on his recovery not how much I have to spend to ensure it.

I know that was a horrible thing for you to have to go through. I'll send all the good wishes I can Samson's way. I'm glad that your quick thinking and the vet's quick response was enough and that he seems to be recovering.
