Could they not create a worse image of SDs?!

The Service and Therapy Dog forum is for all service and therapy dogs regardless of whether or not their status is legally defined by federal or state law, how they are trained, or whether or not they are "certified." Posts questioning or disputing a person's need for a service or therapy dog, the validity of a person's service or therapy dog, or the dog's ability to do the work of a service or therapy dog are not permitted in this forum. Please keep discussions fun, friendly, and helpful at all times.

O.M.G.

Could this reporter not find any service dogs to film that would create a WORSE public image...?

WIVB.com

Seriously, the only options were a big black dog wearing an poorly fitted prong collar and vest with misspelled fluorescent DIY handwriting or a ~20-30lb dog riding in the kid seat of a shopping cart instead of walking properly, on the floor, where it belongs?

Ugh. Just... ugh. confused

I've seen other hearing dogs in carts because the dog works better on alerting them to someone coming up to them...

No where does it state that you can't hand paint "Do Not Pet" on your Service Dog vest.. It had a service dog patch on...

I found it very informative and didn't give me a negative vibe at all..

It's not a matter of law, it's a matter of ethics. The government shouldn't have to legislate common sense. It shouldn't have to tell service dog handlers to keep dogs out of shopping carts anymore than it should have to tell them to clean up the poop if their dog takes a dump in the center aisle of Target.

There's been much talk on this board about the SD community self-regulating, rather than implementing mandatory certification. Most recently, the topic came up in discussion about the VA regulations effecting the ADA. If that news report reflects the standards the SD community is willing to accept, there's really no hope of self-regulation. frown

I wasn't a bit fan of the particular affect of the video.. But if you're like me and rarely ever Watch the video's the article was a great step forward. I Liked that they actually got terms and laws correct this time around.

I think with any news report you have to look at the overall message to decide if it's something you want to throw a fit about.

I've seen this from a dozen different people on facebook... not just service dog friends.. so at least the Much needed message is getting out there. Although I really don't have access issues and some of these people's access issues might be related to their in store behavior but the message of 'all service dogs have rights' is one that Everyone needs to remember.

I do dislike that last statement about not being asked questions.. .and Actually plan to write the news station because of that particular fact but other than that it was a decent article.

'all service dogs have rights' isn't quite correct.

It's the PWD that has rights, not the dog.

I haven't read the article, but I will say that no SD should be riding in a shopping cart.

I saw a service dog at an anime convention recently that was wearing a piece of paper with DO NOT PET and other things hand-printed on it, over the dog's vest... I did not consider them to be unprofessional, I realized the reason was most likely because a lot of people were ignoring the dog's vest patches and were petting and distracting the dog so they were trying to add something that would be more noticeable and maybe people would pay attention to... I thought about offering to make them a better sign because theirs looked hastily written and it was with a light-colored pen (hard to read) and I happened to have bold Sharpies but I didn't want to disturb/bother them any more than they I am sure they had already been that day...
ANyway my point is that maybe something like that is why the one dog is wearing the written day-glo do not pet lettering (I bet the reason it is poorly worded is they just ran out of space.)

I've definitely seen worse examples of "SDs" in video articles. This wasn't too too bad.

I am more concerned about how she uses her dog as a fall breaker and bracer..
She should use a walker if she stumbles that much.. frown and could use her dog for extra support or other mobility assistance....

I agree with Albie I think Oxny Is being judgemental by saying this. I saw nothing wrong with either handlers presentation. (excuse my spelling) I am sure cuz She/he oxny has judged my conduct and commets on here. I feel there are too many judgments done on here in haste. We all know how hard it is to deal with out siders that don't understand us SD handlers. Let a lone how we can afford the aquipment that we need, to what is used or who uses what. I don't think it is fair that others in our socail group and communitie to judge us if we are legit enough. Saying this probably makes other question my legitmity also. I don't really care what others think I am learning not to care since someone very kind on here told me I shouldn't. But I do agree with Albie neither handler was in the wrong.
