|Actually the reason for LEK asking this of daphne is because of the issues you were having in the beginning. That rule was extended longer than the usual first three months because of some difficulties you were having with her confidence. It is typical for the initial adjustment period to be just between the handler and the dog. However, after the initial adjustment period, when the dog is clear who the handler is, the dog can then interact more closely with the family. Becker plays with my kids and hubby all the time. Hubby will take Becker for a walk for me when I am not feeling well. Laura, if you feel that daphne is doing well with you now then you can enlist other family members to help you with her care. Ultimately she is your dog.
Just remember that part of her job also is to motivate you. So be aware that if you give responsibility of some of her care over to someone else too often, she may stop asking you for those things and will ask the others instead. So be sure there is balance there. With Becker if I have hubby take him out more than a couple times a week, he starts expecting that everytime he sees my husband of if I call him, that he is going to be taking Becker out and Becker then will break commands I have given. So make sure to watch for that. Dogs like consistency and will always look for a pattern to anticipate.
