|I always go by the assumption the dog is working, so it is never appropriate to ask to pet. The person is trying to live their life. I would not think about asking someone in a wheelchair if they could show me what it does, or take a spin in it. A Service Dog, to me, is an aid for daily living.
Maybe at a park, & the dog is unvested, I might ask.
I don't know why folks see a vested dog & think they can interrupt someone's day to satisfy some urge to pet.
Years ago I had a deal with a friend of mine. I took her SD for off leash runs & vigourous walks in exchange for massages...she was a massage therapist. While she would frequently be approached by folk while he was in harness & vest, nobody approached when I had him on a regular leash. Why should a vest/harness be a beacon? I do not know
