Can I get fined for having a service dog if I don't get an attorney to duly certify him?

The Service and Therapy Dog forum is for all service and therapy dogs regardless of whether or not their status is legally defined by federal or state law, how they are trained, or whether or not they are "certified." Posts questioning or disputing a person's need for a service or therapy dog, the validity of a person's service or therapy dog, or the dog's ability to do the work of a service or therapy dog are not permitted in this forum. Please keep discussions fun, friendly, and helpful at all times.

Glad you got the right info, some people on Yahoo Answers were giving you very incorrect information. Shadow knows what she's talking about and won her case.

Oh gosh, yahoo answers. Never ask any serious questions on there. People who answer usually don't have a clue what they're talking about and they give opinions or guesses, or they won't even read your question right and say something dumb.

I'm glad you were given the info you needed though. Every HERE is certainly spot on. Good luck!

Well, they got 3 correct answers via Yahoo. All from real SD handlers. I was one of them and I know the other 2. The rest of the answers, pfft. One said to just have a lawyer do it or some wackiness like that. Completely clueless.

But you got the right answers now.

Sad face, the law links and short answer weren't what the OP wanted, but I do hope that they are found helpful if anything further does come of this incident. I know I haven't been on here much, someone posted that the OP needed help and linked to the forum. I used to be on here a lot.

Yahoo answers is mostly a joke. I agree, most responders barely read the question before spewing ridiculous opinion. If I ever needed SD advice I'd start on dogster first. Kudos to this group for consistantly offering credibly researched information. way to go

(I know some people here post in both forums...I'm usually reading non SD categories and that 'advice' is much worse in general)

Awesome- Troubles ... this may/will be hard to do as you go through this... but .... breathe... every time you have a question, get upset come here and vent... ask... reassure yourself that you are doing the right thing and they are WRONG!

A lawyer will NOT certify you... a crazy unheard of request... they are only asking you to do this because they have NO clue of the reality of the law and what to ask for.

You have a letter from your doctor, and you request this reasonable accommodation... this is all you need to give them. The letter is general, and you do NOT need to tell them what your disability is, nor does your doctor.

Their attorney (by what you've said they've requested, they've prob not even talked to an attorney)... once DOJ sends them the forms for them to fill out... they will realize all the trouble/fines they can get.

As you've seen by the response here... you've got a great support group.

I too have gone through this with our manager/owner and hoa.
