I have been doing this so long I kind of tune out everyone... I am happy to answer questions and educate the public, but I don't have time to listen to all the "oh doggie!" comments I get laugh out loud

A thought to offer for folks, if so many people are ignorant about service dogs then maybe take some time to politely educate people. It's very rare that I see service dogs around, maybe 1 or 2 a year tops. Most service dogs I have seen have been for blind people, I only recently learned about many of the other things they can do. I'll be the first one to admit that I know very little about them, and may be prone to say or do something inappropriate. I would be willing to bet that a good deal of interaction that people are talking about here are simply someone who has had no exposure to service dogs and they are curious.

I realize that some people are legitamately jerks, and I'm sure that getting lots of questions (especially asked poorly) gets old. But returning rudeness for rudeness only manages to make people less friendly to you. Take some time to be patient and help people understand, even to understand where they were inappropriate in their questions, and you'll help people to grow in having better interactions in the future.

Harley and I were out and about this morning running errands and such. I decided to pop into Goodwill to see what they had and there was this woman, who upon seeing Harley had this ugly, most disgusted, judgmental look on her face. I wanted to say something like, "What's your problem? Do you know how ugly that expression makes you look?"
I didn't, but I wanted to.

Titus, these are not things we say, but things we think.

I do take time to educate people. But it gets old in certain ways. I live in a small city and see the same people a lot. When the same people push you for info about your disability, try to convince you to let them pet your dog, offer dog treats, whistle to your dog, take up tons of time talking to you, or make snide comments about you faking it; it gets really old and aggravating. Or when 3 people standing together in a group each ask to pet your dog and you have to tell all 3 of them No separately; you begin to see the idiocy in people. It really wears me down. Thinking these things and not saying them helps me cope with the stupidity of my neighbors and gets me through the outing. Most of the time I just ignore them. Responding has just made people hate me. If someone's kid is harassing me or my dog and I ask the parent to control their child, I'm a rude B*****. Or people tell me to go to hell or that I'm mean if I avoid their child or don't let their child pet my dog. Not telling people about my disability either means I'm faking it or rude. Sad to say, this is how people often are. Not just here, I've experienced this lots of places.

However, there are people who understand that my dog is working and that I don't want to share my medical history with them. Running into one of these people when I'm having a rough day makes things a bit better. Especially if others overhear this and will also leave me alone.

Titus,

These are things that run through our heads, not out of our mouths. I am always polite and normally take time to talk. There are times when I cut it short (when its the 18th time that day in that store and I'm never gonna get out of there if I don't or if I just don't feel well) but even then, I'm not rude. My thoughts may be, but it does get old....especially with the really really idiotic comments and people screaming and jumping into freezers.

My husband nagged me until I added it. He loves this thread! I think he hates the stupid comments more than I do. Or maybe he's just tired of me coming home and venting at him.

Ooooh, here's some good ones:

Lady:Can my child pet your dog?
Me: I'm sorry no. My dog is working.
Lady: Then can I pet him?
Sure lady, I'm sure your kid would be thrilled with that. Let's all do stuff then tell our kids not too.

"Don't pet that dog Billy, it bites. Proceed to blow cigarette smoke in child's face." My dog does not bite Billy but your parent may give you lung cancer.

OOOOO, I got more. We have lots of stupid people around here and I tend to keep this stuff pent up inside.

"Your dog is sooo cute! I want to steal him." I want to steal your brain, oh wait, you don't have one.

"Please, please PLEASE let me pet him!" Please, please, PLEASE let me do my grocery shopping!

"Ewwww! Dogs are dirty! Why is that filthy thing in here?" Ewww, babies are dirty! Why do they let those smelly beast in here?

The funniest comment I ever got was from a child. It was in the dead of a Florida winter (don't laugh, it's cold for me and Byron wink ) and I had Byron dressed in black pjs and his vest. Because the ground was pretty cold, I also put his leopard print booties on (in retrospect the leopard print probably wasn't the most professional choice, but it was all we had). We walked into the grocery store and a little kid said clear as day "Look Mommy! I want shoes like that dog has!" I turned around and said, "me too! They're cool!"
