Super Service- Boy!!
|
| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 10:46pm PST | | | | | | So, today was idiot day at Wal Mart. I am used to being the local "celebrity" and all the attention that comes with having a SD, that's not what I'm talking about. I mean we were in the dairy section and this lady turned around and upon seeing Harley, left the door to the cooler open, left her buggy and her purse in it, leaped over one of the bin coolers into another bin cooler, screaming to get away from Harley. Poor boy looked at me with this, "What did I do?" look on his face. I said, "It's ok baby. She's being silly." Not long before that, these teen age girls were coming down an aisle that intersected the aisle we were on. They saw Harley and started to very loudly say, "How dat big dog get in here? What dat big dog doing in here? I can't go where dat big dog has been," and then proceed to follow us. With it being a holiday weekend, of course they were busier than normal and we got the normal...people who normally see us stopping to ask how he's doing, people asking questions, people making comments. We were about half way through the store when the management came up and asked if I needed any help and wanted to make sure we were ok (before freaky lady in the dairy section or I may have directed them to her for she obviously needed help). They do this every time we are in the store so I think they hear the buzz about the dog in the store and then seek us out to check on us.
Anyway, so that made me think...
When you encounter a rude person, or an over the top reaction, or even a stupid question/comment, what runs through your mind but does not come out your mouth? When freaky lady was jumping over and into a freezer bin, I was thinking, "forget our meds today, did we?" When I was READING the cereal box and the dad was telling the kid that Harley sees for me, I was thinking, "yup, and he reads and drives for me too". In the produce section, Harley alerted and I had to sit (did so out of the way). One lady told her kid that Harley was getting in trouble for something. We were eye to eye, me not speaking, watching for his sign to release me. I would have said something to that one had I been in a position where I could have even though I rarely respond to comments that aren't directed at me. I don't remember what I was thinking exactly, but it was something along the lines, " where do you get these things?" And to the people that just walk up to me and say, "You aren't blind", I generally think, "Tell me something I don't know, why don't ya."
My thoughts may be rude, but my responses aren't.
Even with this craziness, Harley stayed focused and did well. I could tell he was stressed and did all I could to get out quickly, and Harley got lots of praises.

Hubby has learned to turn me around or remind me to mumble. It use to embarrass my mother to no end. Friends just say I'm as subtle as a freight train.

Odin - SD
I've never met a- cheese I didn't- like. |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 11:13am PST | | | | | | I just watched that SP episode..lol wow! Yeah, I know those days where you really have to bite your tongue to keep from saying what is really on your mind. I also tend to slip sometimes, especially if someone is being very rude toward Odin. I usually don't quite swear at them, but I have been known to make people shut their mouths.
"If rudeness and stupidity was considered a disabling condition, you could have a dog too."

awe come on pet- me, you know you- wanna! |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 12:25pm PST | | | | | | I usually have to bite my tongue because I hear a lot of people say to their kids "Oh look at that a doggy!!!" I always feel like turning around, looking at my Service Dog and saying "Oh like at that a kiddy!!!" LOL. Hubby almost always has to monitor me when we are out because my mouth will get me in trouble. I actually have a t-shirt he bought me that says "Danger mouth works faster then brain" or something like that. I was having a really, really bad day one day and we were at walmart and a lady with a cast on said "Oh a dog. What's that doing in here?" On top of having a really, really bad day I had heard more then enough stupid comments about my dog that day so I turned around, looked her straight in the eyes and said "Oh a cast. What's that doing there?" She had a cast on her arm for whatever reason. Her mouth dropped open and I said "Oh now I see why you are here, you fly trap stomach is full and you need to pick up another one." Hubby grabbed my arm and got me out of the store as fast as he could. Once I calmed down we went back in and got what we needed. Part of my disability is Borderline Personality Disorder, not using it as an excuse just explaining, so I can't always control my temper and on really, really bad days I just lose it when I hear to many idiot/stupid comments about my dog. One that was more recent I was able to handle a bit better. We were in walmart for a new camera and a few other things and 2 little boys spotted Gambler and said "Look mommy a dog." The mother said "Yes you see how well behaved that dog is.....I wish you two were that well behaved." I almost turned around and said "Try obedience classes. They actually do help." Hubby and I just started to chuckle under our breaths(by that point we weren't near them anymore) and did our shopping but so far that trip I had already been hit by one mother more interested in pointing out the dog to her kid then watching what she was doing, had one person in a wheel chair say loudly "Get me away from that dog. Why do they even let them in here service dog or not it's disgusting and that dog smells horrible." Mind you he had just gotten a bath that afternoon and was 100% dry by the time we got there and had been fully groomed. Plus dealt with another person saying that he was calling the police and telling them that there was a women in walmart faking a disability to sneak her pet into the store. That one was just before the comments from the mother and I had just about had it and was at my breaking point. I told that guy to go right ahead and I would be more then willing to press charges because he was blocking my path and not letting me and my service dog past. Would have had a manager called when we made it to the camera section but one saw what was happening and came over. The guy was told to leave us alone or leave the store. I have spoken to this manager before a few times and he, as all the walmart staff here, has always been extremely polite and knowledgable. I do try to watch my tongue though.....otherwise i'd probably wind up in jail more often then not. | | | | |

I had a soldier say that to us a little over a week ago. I did the "Oh look a soldier" right back at him. He did get the point. Of course, it helped that Scooter rolled his eyes and did that "I'm soo sick of being called a puppy" sigh.

Jenna
I know just- enough to cause- trouble. |
| Barked: Sun Jul 5, '09 6:26am PST | | | | | | Yesterday, my family went to Fort Bragg for the Fourth of July Celebration. I left Serenity with my husband so I could take Jenna to the potty (decided the best place to do it was back behind the portajohns where a lot of people were not hanging out.) As we were walking, Jenna still vested, a young soldier tried to reach out to pet Jenna but I knew she was trying hard to hold it. She had to go, pretty much signaled me that while on the parade field. I told Jenna to "leave it" as we walked by the soldier (he was out of uniform, but eh, the haircut and stuff gives it away). He shot me a dirty a look, I glanced at him "You don't want to be petted when you're trying to get somewhere to take a crap!" I think he got the picture. I didn't see him again, I'm generally a very nice person, especially when I have Jenna with me, but I knew she had to go. | | | | |

| Barked: Sun Jul 5, '09 9:31am PST | | | | | | Hear are the thoughts that go through my head with the odd comments that proceed them:
"You can't pet that dog Sally, he's mean." He's not mean Sally but your mommy is an idiot.
"How'd you get that dog in here?" With a leash moron.
"Let's see if we can pet the dog without that lady knowing." Just because I'm disabled doesn't mean I can't see and hear.
"What kind of disability do you have?" The kind that makes me want to beat up people who ask personal questions. How much do you weigh? When was your last orgasm? How much was your nose job? How did your kid get that bruise on his face?
"Where can I get a vest so I can take my dog everywhere?" www.goscrewyourself.com
"Look at the cute widdle puppy!! Isn't he just the most adowable widdle thing in the world? I just want to steal him from his owner and take him home with me to cuddle all day!!" Look at the stupid person who never learned to talk like an adult! Aren't they just the most moronic thing you've ever heard?
"OH MY GOD THERE'S A DOG IN HERE!! HOW THE HELL DID A DOG GET IN HERE?!?!?" Guess I'll be applying for a hearing dog next week.
"Mommy, I thought dogs aren't allowed in stores. Why does that lady have a dog in here? Because she's inconsiderate and breaking the law. I'll call the police." Yeah lady, you do that. The police and I will have a good laugh together.
"Is that a seeing eye dog?" Maybe for a midget. Mordecai weighs 25lbs and doesn't quite hit my knee. He also has patches on his vest that say Medical Alert Dog.
"Is that dog for you or do you take it around to stores so it can find cancer in people?" I take him around to stores so he can tell who the idiots are.
Weee, this was fun! All the things I've never said just got said! That made me feel better.

What big ears- you have...

| Barked: Sun Jul 5, '09 9:53am PST | | | | | | I think part of the problem might just be Walmart being the store it is... I try to avoid Walmart if at all possible because it tends to be a harrowing experience, plus I tend to get irritated when people walk really slowly or block the aisle while I'm shopping, and that is pretty much what all of Walmart looks like.
However I did end up going to Walmart on Friday, totally forgetting about the fact that is was a holiday weekend. I was amazed because despite the crowded parking lot it actually turned out that the store was a lot less busy than the other times I've been there.
I don't have an SD but I have gotten plenty of weird/rude comments about my dogs. A while ago I was walking my dog into the park and some lady first did a sort of jump/scream as we walked past (we were about 20 feet away from her and not walking towards her) and said loudly something like, "Why people gotta bring they DOGS around??" (saying "dogs" like it was a plague-carrying rat or something) It's a PUBLIC PARK! Where do you want people to walk their dogs?

You CRACK ME UP! I will have to remember some of your come backs for when I just can't hold it in anymore.
I wish I could avoid Wal Mart. Our options are Wal Mart, Piggly Wiggly, or Winn Dixie. Wal Mart is the only place with the selection necessary for my food restrictions.
