I find it so comforting when employees of a federal agency don't know federal law.

I was at the post office filling out an envelope to send a gift to my grandpa. Mordecai was with me of course; vested with patches galore and standing quietly at my side. An employee came up to us; made little clicking noises at Mord, made a little Come Here gesture with his hand and told me that only guide dogs are allowed in the post office. I turned to him and told him that all service dogs are allowed by federal law and guide dogs are only one kind of service dogs. He didn't say a word but just stood there and watched me as I completed my post office business.

I just don't understand how a federal agency can't seem to teach their employees federal law. I go to this post office a few times a week and this is the first time an employee has said something to me. But the fact that this employee tried to distract my dog but he didn't know the laws. If this ever happens again, I'm going to write a letter to someone in charge. Maybe the postmaster general?

I'd write a letter asking them to educate their employees on service dog laws and etiquette.

If you send them a letter, just make sure that you remember post offices and other government buildings are covered under the Rehab Act and not the ADA. Sorry they were so rude, my post office is really nice to us.

I would write to the post office you had the issue with. Sorry I don't have info on the Rehab Act. I am hoping someone else will because I'm interested in learning more!

I actually had the same thing happen to me at my local post office.

The woman who made the comment looked a little stunned and said "oh...really? ok" so I left it at that, but it can't hurt to drop off some literature with the manager of that branch, explain the incident, and ask that he go over the laws with all of the employees.

My lawyer, Jason Singleton, would probably write them a letter. He's over in Eureka on L.
Sorry to hear the post office folks were being a but, sounds kinda like the situation I had with one of the pharmacists at Longs.

I found this on the Rehab Act. I didn't read it in detail, but I didn't see anything covering SDs when scanning it. It does say that every agency must have their own 504, so maybe it's in there somewhere....? I have no idea. Does anyone else know?
