ADI Public Access Test

The Service and Therapy Dog forum is for all service and therapy dogs regardless of whether or not their status is legally defined by federal or state law, how they are trained, or whether or not they are "certified." Posts questioning or disputing a person's need for a service or therapy dog, the validity of a person's service or therapy dog, or the dog's ability to do the work of a service or therapy dog are not permitted in this forum. Please keep discussions fun, friendly, and helpful at all times.

There seems to be a misunderstanding about the use of this test.
www.adionline.org/publicaccess.html

Some seem to think ADI won't let anyone else use their test. This is incorrect. If they didn't want people to use their test, they would have put it in the 'members only' section so it was unavilable to the general public.

What they DON'T want is people who use this test saying they passed the ADI public access test or trainers unafiliated with ADI using it as a benchmark for their clients. That is why they have the cautions:
* "This test is here as information only. This test was designed to be administered by professional Assistance Dog Trainers.*
* Administering this test by non members of Assistance Dogs International is not authorized by Assistance Dogs International nor would completion of this test be considered certification by Assistance Dogs International.
* Assistance Dogs International accepts no liability for use of this test."

Their test can be used as an informal way for owners to see how ready their dog is for public access - the "information only" reference.

Part of the ADI mission is to
" Establish and promote standards of excellence in all areas of Assistance Dog acquisition, training and partnership."

Membership in this organization is highly sought after and has to be earned. Their membership is made up of organizations such as assistance dog schools and individual trainers. ADI works hard to maintain their high standards and they police their membership accordingly. Membership in ADI is re-evaluated every five years for this reason, and renewal of membership status is not automatic or guaranteed.

So, if you're a dog owner, go ahead and take their test! It isn't that different from tests on other sites, except for the dismissal clause. Just use it as it was intended, for your information.

If you can find an ADI associated trainer, you're one lucky puppy! You can be sure you've got one of the best!

* Note that ADI referrs to "professional Assistance Dog Trainers." That's a discussion for another thread.
