I elevate Bella's bowl..if I didn't she can barely get to the floor to eat it. I have never seen anything relating bloat to food bowl elevation, however I have seen it the other way around.

they came out with do not elevate your dogs bowls to prevent bloat awhile ago. bloat is caused by gas in the stomach which can be caused by the dog eating too fast or by swallowing air while eating which is accomplished by feeding in an elevated feeder. Another thing is the food you feed, grain heavy kibble can play a part, where as grain free is less likely to. Canned is the least likely out of what I feed my dogs.

Allowing a kibble fed dog to drink a lot right after eating is another no no as is exercise 1 or 2 hours before eating and 2 hours after.

Google Purdue's Bloat study.

Thank you all...there is a lot of confusion around this one. Tessie--I've heard others mention this study also...doesn't it seem that they can suck in more air feeding from a bowl on the floor than elevated??? I'm just trying to figure this one out!!!

My thinking on this matter is that a st bernard is a anamal and no animal in the wild or domesticated neeeds to feed from an elavated position, It is not a natural means of feeding for them. I belive that bloating is more caused by gulping down the food, they feel eather that there not getting enough food and are starving or in multiple dog enviroments feel that if they dont eat quick the outhe dog will get it.the third is lets face it some dogs are gist pigs and dont have any table manners. Mine is a danty eater. she takes so long to eat that she feel she has to lay down to eat. take about 20 min.
