To the OP:

Please, please don't breed more rotties! Our rescue is overrun as it is, and we are turning down rotties EVERY WEEK. And guess what, we aren't even a rottie specific rescue! I have 8 puppies coming in later today, placed a male yesterday, have a female coming in from KY in two weeks and have two more females still in foster. Turned down two in Alleghany county and two more in Lexington SC. Both our NC Rottie Rescues are full too. In fact, if EVERYONE who bred took 2 or 3 years off from breeding, maybe us rescuers could catch up....

As a new dogster member, but NOT a new dog owner, I came to the forum to read about canine topics, not have to read about "reputable breeders" and not breeding dogs unless you are experienced. Well, let me ask..... how do you become an experienced breeder if you "shouldn't breed without experience"? Oxymoron, if you ask me. I have owned Rottweilers since 1998, and have bred them many times. There are questions I STILL have about breeding and health, and I have over 11 years in just ROTTWEILERS. I am not a REPUTABLE breeder, I am a HOBBY breeder..... but, I have every puppy health checked, tails docked, shots givin, and AKC certified..... I have the prents on premesis, and the perspective buyers can socialize with the litter..... So, does that make me reputable now, or do I have to pay some high stakes company to refer me?

Abby, you really shouldn't be breeding unless you know everything about it! You shouldn't have to ask questions.
And honestly, I don't think anyone should be breeding unless they are breeding to improve the breed. Don't get me wrong, when I look at breeders, I look for health and temperament first, but I also believe they should be breeding towards the breed standard (responsibly). There are already TONS of beautiful adoptable healthy Rottweilers in shelters and rescues!
I'm done.

I have not been here for awhile. Been busy helping rotties that were bred and cast away, abused, neglected and every other situation.
Plus now I have one of my own with osteosarcoma ( cancer) who was rescued and saved off death row.

So here goes.

If you do not do your homework / research / learn from another responsible reputable breeder, you are NOT ready to breed.

Health checks do NOT cover eyes, hips,elbows, heart, blood disorders and so many other things.

Some things to learn about before even considering breeding

Some of the more common Rottweiler health problems include:

* Hip Dysplasia
* Elbow Dysplasia
* Panosteitis
* Addison's Disease
* Aortic Stenosis
* Cataracts
* Bloat
* Progressive Retinal Atropy
* von Willebrand's Disease

Alot of these are inherited and unless they are CERTIFIED clear in BOTH parents / grandparents etc. the dog should not be bred.
There are so many out there from BYB's, hobby, Puppymills, there are not many sound rotts out there.

I love mutts and pures. I have both and I rescue all. I will not sugar coat anything I say when it will help protect a breed I love right to my core.

Yes everyone has to start somewhere but breeding right away is NOT the way to go. Unless your dog(s) are of great linage and free as possible with certifications, do not chance making your dog or the pups suffer a life of pain, sugery,killed because of temerment etc. Breed for the right reasons and the right way. Make ambassadors for the breed.

I still and will always stand by my org post.

Okay so...I think the original question was how do you know it is first heat cycle? I read every post and that question still wasn't answered. I clicked on this topic because I was looking for that answer. I have a 10 month old rotti female, who by the way, I got from a reputable breeder in Napa. I am NOT looking to breed my girl...I just signed papers with the breeder not to have her fixed until after her first heat cycle. I thought it was at like 6 months...she is almost a year on Jan 11th and she still hasn't had her first cycle yet?But then I am not sure what I am looking for. I do understand the big controversy with back breeding and all that...but I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to the original question so I could find out...Thanks...

Usually there will be some swelling in that area and some discharge. She may have already have had a heat but went un-noticed because it may have been a small amount which is not unusual. Just like some women, she also may be a late bloomer.

Just watch for signs of odd behavior from her usual one.
