I have decided to do ground raw after 2 of my guys who are gulpers almost choked on the raw bones. I have been getting the premade ground mixes (80 meat, 10 bones, 10 organs) But since it is so expensive I decided to make my own. I ordered a grinder, and I ordered 40# of chicken necks. My question is how many pounds of muscle meat and organs must I add to the 40# of chicken necks. I plan to make a huge batch and freeze it individually for my 4 dogs. I still plan of giving them bones when I can supervise all them properly.

According to Charlie's thread on meats and bones necks are 30% bone. That is if the skin is on. Skin off, more like 50-75% I think.

So if skin is on add about 20 pounds of red meat to 10 pounds of necks. If skin is off add about 40 pounds of red meat to 10 pounds of necks.

I would actually keep the grinds separate so you can fine tune how much bone you are offering.

Maybe once the stinkers get used to the idea you are feeding the good stuff they will calm down. Max did after a year once I started feeding big/small so he got really and truly full. Maybe, not all dogs will!

Thanks a lot Maxwell. I guess I got a little spoiled with the premade. But I'm getting 40# of chicken necks for $37.... much cheaper

Noticed that I made a slight error in my thread. Here is the correct page for chicken neck analysis:

http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/853?fg=&man=&lfa cet=&count=&max=&sort=&qlookup=&offset=&format=Full&new=

It's 36%, not 30%. Will be fixing that asap.

I'm thinking 60-70% meat sounds awfully generous for most chicken necks I've seen, especially for reasonable prices. I'd do at least half-and-half meaty-meat to chicken necks, and your 10%-15% organ meat on top of that. I'd judge them once you get them and see how your dogs do with the mix and make adjustments before making up a big batch.

Remember that even if you've decided that bone-in meals aren't for you and your dogs, that BIG raw meaty bones should still be a part of things a couple times a week for all the other qualities that "food" contributes to life for a dog. big grin

how much were you paying for the premade? Are you in the US? If so, www.saddogsushi.com sells prey model balanced ground mixes. (beef, turkey, chicken, pork, and mixed). You can order 10 lbs for $1.99/lb
It is 80% meat 10% bone 5% liver and 5% other organs
