I'd like to start giving glucosamine in a more natural form instead of a pill but I want to make sure I'm giving enough. Anyone know how much glucosamine and chondroitin in chicken feet? Or how many feet I'd need to give an ~80 lb dog as a preventative (no joint problems)?

Besides feet, gullet, and trachea, what foods are high in glucosamine?

Also, chondroitin vs MSM? Is one preferable to the other in conjunction with glucosamine?

I have not been able to find an exact amount, but from what I understand any part of the animal that is high in cartilage contains a lot of glucosamine. Also, bone-marrow is high in glucosamine, so by just feeding RMBs, your dog is getting some. Given that information, I'd think that pig's feet would be a great source of glucosamine as well.

Also, the general belief online is that there is no such thing as too much glucosamine, unless you were feeding half a jar of supplements, in which case your dog would probably just get an upset tummy.

The only information I could find was that cartilage is about 5% glucosamine. Max would need about an ounce a day to equal the amount he gets in his supplement and probably does especially on days he gets bone but it isn't enough, he does far better getting a supplement as well.

Math >>>> 1 ounce = 28 grams x .05 = 1.4 grams or 1400 mg.

A chicken foot is only about 2-3 ounces, very unlikely half of that is cartilage. Eating enough to make up that ounce for Max would put him over his calcium needs as he only needs 1.5 chicken feet a day for calcium.

Commercial glucosamine is made from beef trachea I believe, that is all cartilage. I would think tendons would be rich in the stuff, any joint should be.

Hmm well I don't want to give too much calcium by overdoing bones. What about green lipped mussels? Those contain glucosamine, right? Or is the glucosamine in the shell? I'm guessing the shell is high in calcium so it wouldn't really solve my problem if the glucosamine was only in the shell.

I was advised by my vet clinic to give Rexy glucosamine hydrochloride as it's more bioavailable for dogs. The supplements that I have are human grade and are made of crustacean shells.

I hadn't thought of ears. I do have a few of those from my last Hare-Today order, I'll have to see if there are any ethnic markets here that sell them.

I saw green lipped mussels at the store today which is what made me think of it. I bought a couple and of course Onyx doesn't like them but I'm sure I could disguise them in something. I saw the powder Hare-Today sells but it's a bit pricey.

Interesting about the glucosamine hydrochloride, Rexy. I checked and apparently the one I've been giving is that kind, so that's something. Schiff

I do have a fair supply of chicken feet but I don't want to overdo his calcium.
