My new puppy comes home in six days and I'm convinced we want to switch to raw immediately after she comes home (she'll be 8 weeks) and want to go the cold turkey route.

So I'll be starting with chicken for the first week before moving to any other proteins.

I have a few questions...

Boston Terriers due to their snouts can't have larger protein bones so we'll be sticking to chicken bone in meals and turkey bone in meals.

How should I start chicken boneless or bone in or rotate? If rotating how often?

Are there any pre-ground organ meals? I am hoping to find a supplier of pre-ground just organ for when I have to feed organs, the stuff is so smelly and I have an over sensitive gag reflex that has been lingering for two years since I was pregnant. I'm just not sure I can control it with raw organs. When I had ferrets on raw I had a horrid time and had my husband feed them the organs cause I just couldn't stomach it. My husband now works more and won't be able to feed organs when I need him to so I need to man up or find an alternative to feeding smelly organs. Any tips? Could I freeze organs if I can't find an affordable ground organ? Will it help the smell? Are there any supplements I could give instead of organs?

Any supplements in general I should be feeding with raw?

I've read some feed rice and eggs (are these raw or cooked?) what type of rice? How often?

Currently the puppy weighs 3lbs 8 oz (as of Monday)

Thanks in advance for all the information and help.

No rice. I also used to think this was a good idea since I had been told it by a vet to help with bad belly. But raw means raw meat, unless you are doing BARF.

I have two "little" dogs with shortish noses and they do quite well with chicken bones, though I do sometimes hit the leg or thigh with a mallet to make it a little easier on them.

I do think frozen organs are easier to manage, like liver. It is so slimy, and it is easier to deal with if solid.

More advice coming from the better informed, I am sure.

I imagine you'd have to separate the liver into baggies then freeze?

I don't plan on doing BARF I just want RAW, I don't think veggies are bad as a treat here and there, but I'd like to stick to just raw as meals.

What is your concern with the snout? My pug Cooper has a blast annihilating even the biggest RMB's big grin

Turkey bones are substantially tougher, I'd stick with the bone in chicken and then later on assess if you think she can get through them.

Most pups need the bone to regulate the poop. Not enough and you'll know it lol. When I switched all of my dogs we did bone in chicken almost exclusively the entire first two weeks. Then added in boneless meals.

Organs really aren't that smelly at all. And pre-mades are typically just as stinky if not stinkier than whole (or at least that's what I've heard). You can check local pet supply stores if you like but typically I think people order that kind of stuff online (we never have as it's much easier and far less expensive for us to throw in the liver or kidney from the local butcher or our freezer). I have not heard of premades that are exclusively organ meat alone (all I'm aware of are balanced with meat/bone/organ) but again we don't feed like that so I'm not entirely sure if it exists or not.

We don't do any supplements here.

We also don't do ANY grains.

We do offer eggs about once a week with shell.

You only mention chicken and turkey, just want to be sure you're aware red meats are super important. Do you have a good source of pork, beef, lamb, venison etc lined up?

Yes, our Cookie is fond of green beans, so I let her have those. Pretty much like you say...as a treat.

I have four dogs, so don't need to separate the liver...between the four of them they can eat the whole pound. But if you have a stout knife and a sturdy arm, you can cut through the frozen package and then bag up the parts.

I love the name! Juno. Actually almost used it once...a friend had a pup named "Juniper" and I was going to shorten to Juno for one of the pups.

We have a good supply of frozen fish, beef, chicken, turkey, and on occasion we can find other meats such as rabbit, bison, etc.

We have intention to use the beef and fish to our advantage but I live in a VERY small town and only have access to Walmart and a Safeway so we are limited on what we can get. Safeway does have a butcher that can order organ meats as needed (liver, kidneys, hearts, brains, testicles, etc.) I know that heart is a muscle meat so it doesn't count as organs.

I think that feeding 'human grade' will be more expensive but I really can't get to a butcher it's an hour drive each way and would have to be done as needed, I don't have a separate freezer yet to store anything so it's not really an option as we don't go to the 'big city' very often and can't stock up on foods we need for raw from a butcher.

We actually are waiting to name her till we meet her but I needed something to call her and Juno was one of the first names we thought of.

Snout issues are the gulping BTs are suppose to be notorious about with raw. They also like pugs, have small little teeth so I was told to not give them any beef bone in meals. As a puppy it seems reasonable to only give her smaller protein sources that have bone in.

Our WalMart sometimes has beef tongue, which is pretty disgusting if you are squeamish, but the dogs love it and it is very rich red meaty meat!

Get the hubby to chop it into portions for you.

I could probably get him to package them for me so I could just feed it frozen. I'm not squeemish just horrid gag reflex since I was pregnant and I'm pretty sure it's all in my mind but I don't want to wake up hating that it's organ meal day. lol!

I am sort of squeamish, but find that when I am dealing with meat for the pups, I just don't think about it.

Once I found myself up to the elbows in a sink full of bull balls. (Yes!) and had to laugh. Pretty bizarre.
