So... I think I made a mistake.

Jake has done well on chicken so I added a new protein mixed with the chicken. Needless to say it has ended in vomiting and hours upon hours of hacking.

So how do you properly introduce a new protein? At the moment jake is eating solely chicken quarters because he's a major gulper and anything else seems to finds its way i fear wedged into his throat. I'm also only giving them frozen at the moment or semi frozen.

Where I get my meat, grocery store, they don't offer much by the mean of on the bone. and i'm afraid to give Jake something he'll be able to fit into his mouth like a cornish game hen or cut pieces of pork. Any ideas?

Also a note on the side,

How is fish from the can like Sardines? can you give that to dogs?

thank you.

what was the new protein you offered Jake?

I don't / won't feed canned fish as I worry about sodium content, however I have found whole frozen Sardines in our local military commissary and I by those and feed them to Crash frozen. He loves it!

What did you give him as the new protein and how much?

Hula gets sardines or mackrel packed in water once a week.

When Saya was introduced to new protein pork I gave her tiny piece with each meal and increased each time she did good if she had diareah I backed off went back to just chicken for a bit then started over and did it slower and eventually she got used to it.

red face. Sorry he got one sardine out of the can. It was packed in water since jake can't have soy.

Just a single canned sardine caused all that trouble? That seems odd, unless he is allergic to fish. One sardine is barely an ounce and pretty bland (assuming it had no added sodium or seasoning). Your sure the upset wasn't from the chicken? Maybe too much fat or too much in general? Did he get organ or anything during that meal?

I don't have much advice for gulpers since Duke is careful--almost dainty!--with bone. I've heard "feed hunks bigger than the dog's head" is the way to handle gulping.

no organs. Jake won't touch organs unless they're those freeze dried type or i cook them. He just leaves them in the pan i feed him in if there's some for some reason attached to the chicken quarter.

That night he had the sardine some of hte sardine juice cuz it was on the sardine and some remeasured chicken i had left from his breakfast. And he vomited it all back up and continued to hack what smelt like fish for the entire day.

I'm going to try whole frozen fish. Since i shouldn't have a fish allergy because he was on TOTW Pacific stream dog food, has had Nutro Limited Ingredient Whitefish and potato dog food and even had the salmon BB Wilderness dog food. So i don't know what it was. Maybe those fish were simply too salty for him. Since I had the rest of them in my pasta that night and I didn't get sick at all.

As for the gulping. I feed him frozen or partically frozen chicken quarters.

Observation#1 Lots of dogs have bad reactions to meat like chicken and pork that get 'enhanced' which basically is adding loads of sodium.
Observation#2 Canned sardines are higher in sodium than fresh sardines.

Could it be the tiny bit of fish was that high in sodium it caused all that? Very unlikely but? My dog needs and gets about 200-300 mg of sodium a day and ND reports 150 mg per sardine packed in tomato sauce so only about doubles the sodium. Could you figure out how much sodium is in that little bit of sardine?

The frozen Sardines I have found are about 6 per pound. Flash Frozen, not salt.

sadly i already threw the can out and trash day was yesterday.

So i'm going to try him on whole frozen fish. Our grocery store sells tillapia whole and some whole fish.

I'm pretty sure it was the canned fish since Jake is back to straight chicken quarters and he's yet to have any stomach upset. Not even eating grass. I'm going to try giving him salmon next.

Is it better to put a few chunks of salmon in his food and not just give him a whole fillet?
