Hello,

So I went raw with jake not too long ago but find myself facing all types of opposition to it. My landlady backed off once i bought jake his own leak-proof bowl to store his defrosting chicken in and i understood her concerns about bacteria event hough i clean everything. >. when i was feeding him Blue Wilderness an TOTW because of his food allergies.

Do you guys have problems like this when people ask what you feed your dogs? Do you get the weird or awkward smile as if they think your joking? or just the wide eyed stare and then told you spoil your dogs?

To give an idea i'm a 20 something year old college student and jake is my first dog. So you can guess the people i speak with are college educated people but seem to think dogs can only eat dog food.

Yes, all the time.

"What about salmonella/othernastybacteria?" or "Bones are bad for dogs, didn't you know that?" or "Raw meat will make them vicious!" etc.
Some of the replies are really funny though...
"I didn't know dogs could eat meat!"

Yes all the time, but I know whats best for my dog. Sometimes I just tell people my dogs are on a home made diet when I dont feel like defending raw. shrug

Teaka

My little dog - a heartbeat at- my feet.

I just started Teaka on pre-made raw this past week. I got the "are you serious?" look. My co-workers keep on telling me that dogs are made to eat kibble.

"You can't feed her raw food, its not cooked!" Duh!!
"She is going to get so sick"
"Her allergies are going to get worse"

However, her coat is starting to look better, after I cleaned her eyes last week, hardly any eye boogies, and her allergies are much better. She doesn't wake up 15 times a night anymore, and she is starting to get more energy. If any of this is not related to the raw food, then maybe its just a fluke. I think its helping Teaka. Plus her hot spot on her head is getting better, finally!! dancing

I don't think I need to explain my choice of dog food to anyone, especially my idiot co-workers.

It is usually not worth it. My normal line is "I am basing my opinion on hours of research and reading on the net, talking to other pet owners, and other sources. You are basing your opinion on something your mom told you when you were 5 to get you to stop feeding the dog scraps. Believe what you want and so will I."

If I feel like getting into a conversation about it I just ask them, what do you think dogs ate 50 years ago? Dog food is a pretty recent industry and a multi billion dollar one built out of convenience and the need to use up the discards from processing food for people.

Or just give them the analogy of eating Total cereal 3 times a day for the rest of your life. Yeah, it might meet your nutritional needs somewhat... but what a life. I prefer to give my dog variety and fresh meats/bones/organs. It's healthier and who can argue with feeding fresh whole foods rather than over processsed dry junk in a bag.

Oh yeah, I get weird looks and reactions all the time. Especially when I'm placing an order for turkey hearts, backs, necks, liver, beef trachea, lungs..etc. The looks on people's faces is priceless if they overhear!
The raw diet has made such a difference in Hula that I really don't care what people say. Plus, have they not heard of all the dog food recalls recently? One can only imagine how dirty those places are that prepare kibble. I know that my girl is getting fresh meat prepared on a clean surface.

At first, I talked about it a lot -- trying to "spread the word" if you will... but now I just don't bother. Like with anything, there are people who have taken the time to research things themselves, forming knowledgeable well-thought out opinions, and then there are people who rely primarily on what people tell them.

There's no point in arguing with the later group.

I got it from friends and family a lot when I first started...I was also accused of wasting meat lol!

I recently got over a bad case of food poisoning (suspected salmonella outbreak) from a well known, up to code (no questionable procedures) restaurant! Yet I have never gotten anything nasty from feeding my dogs raw. In the 4 years of raw feeding I have never gotten ill from the dogs...but I have had food poisoning (restaurant confirmed) more than a few times. So I have been telling people who think it is gross my experience of restaurants are more likely to make one sick lol!
