Tank
A tired dog is a- Good dog |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 10:53am PST | | | | | | Mom talking here.
I got Tank at 7 wks and have had him on several brands of dog food. Found Ruff n Tuff at a feed store that doesn't give him the poops. My request is could someone give me a sample of like a 3 month set up of what to feed Tank to get him onto raw? He was born in April and is about 7 Months old now. He weighs roughly 35#'s and I am confused on how to even start him. I don't know which to do prey model or BARF. He doesn't eat any table foods now due to giving him gas to heck and back. I want whats best for him but am kinda scared to start. If anyone could help me I would so be thankful.

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 11:02am PST | | | | | | Hi Tank! Welcome!
First things first - read Gio's thread, So you're interested in feeding raw. Should be on the first page here. TONS of great info on that thread!
Essentially you'll most likely start with a couple of weeks on bone-in chicken, such as quarters. After he's ok with that, you can branch into another meat, and later into organs. You'll want to feed 2-4% of his ideal weight (I started at 3, some people start lower, your call).
Reading and digesting all the basic info is daunting, but necessary. Don't worry though - honestly, once you get your head around it, it's a very simple diet to execute. And fun for you and Tank!!!
*Ahem* - I may get yelled at for this. I think it's perfectly fine to start giving him chicken quarters while you're still reading about it... after all, the first couple weeks are about as simple as you can get.

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 11:36am PST | | | | | | I just switched my dogs over to RAW. One day they had kibble....the next day they had a chicken quarter. It took us (me) a while to figure out the perfect diet but we are just coming up on the one year anniversary of starting RAW and we have everything down. All 3 of my dogs eat one meal a day in the am and they get a rotation of beef, pork, chicken, eggs, and fish. Everyone is happy and healthy! Good luck! | | | | |

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 12:13pm PST | | | | | | My preference is prey model over barf because mainly I don't believe dogs need vegetables and fruit.
There's a lot of talk on that one. It boils down to:
1. Whether or not one believes wolves are opportunistic carnivores or omnivores. (biologists classify them as carnivores, their bodies are anatomically carnivores).
2. Whether or not one believes wolves eat the prey's stomach contents, which may or may not contain partially digested vegetation. (This is one reason why prey model raw feeders feed green tripe. Green tripe is the stomach of ruminants (4 legged mammals like cow).
3. Whether or not you feed grass fed meat. If you don't, you can supplement with fish oil, or incorporate fish or canned fish regularly in the diet.
The other difference between barf and prey model is that barf feeds a higher bone percent, which I do not agree with and why they do that I don't even know there are no arguments for.
And one more difference is prey model follows the example of, well, prey. The breakdown of the prey a wolf would eat is 80% meat, 10% organ (half which is liver since it's the largest organ of the prey's body), and 10% is edible bone. Prey model feeders believe in following that and balancing over time.
HTH your decision to do prey model or Barf. Of course i'm partial to prey model obviously. So you might want to read up on those issues and decide for yourself.
It is scary to start, I was afraid of doing something wrong and making my dogs have deficiencies. Or even vitamin toxicities. Or what if they choked on a raw bone, or what if they got ecoli? Those were all my concerns before I started. Best thing is to read, read, read so you can begin with confidence. Learn why feeding a raw diet is healthiest for dogs and you can trust your decision.
I do agree with Byron though that you can start with chicken RMBs (raw meaty bones) even if you don't know everything yet. I still learn and I've been raw feeding for 1.5 years!

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 12:22pm PST | | | | | | Well Tank is a Mix of Pit and German Shepard and we think some Lab. I have no clue how big he will get. He is 0ver 30#'s now and stands to his withers above my knee. He is built like a german sheperd with a pit head and lap feet. So I haven't a clue as to his expected size. I know right now on his kibble he is eating 6 cups a day i give him 3 in the am and 3 in the pm and he eats a good bit but snacks on what is left till his next feeding. His pm feeding he inhales. I know that might not help but that is the main problem i am having with getting this started. I plan on taking photo's when I can. I want to do the prey model based on what i have been reading. I feel the dog is built for it and don't see the point in veggies specially since he won't eat any when offered to him now. I am not gonna make him eat them if he doesn't seem interested. I have given him cuts of meet before i cook them. He has had steak (i dropped it before it ever got seasoned lol he got a huge steak. I was pretty sad about it lol) and boy did he just lay there and chow down. I am thinking about starting him on quarters but am not sure how much to feed him. like I said he is about 7 months old and I just don't know how big he will be getting. | | | | |

| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 3:23pm PST | | | | | | My puppy is 8 mos and he is 60lbs. He is a lab mix. I don't think Tank will get over 50lbs if he is 7 mos now and 35lbs (just my guess). (Also since you know who the parents are how big are they? That can give you a rough estimate of how big he'll get). I would start out feeding him using 2.5-3% of fifty and then watch and see how he does. Increase or decrease as necessary. I take Kona in every month to get weighed so I know how he is doing. | | | | |

Tank is the runt of a litter of 8 if that helps. He was also very very skinny at 7 wks. i could touch my middle finger and thumb together around his abdomen. My mom rescued the whole litter out of a garage where they were confined to a little crate/cage.
