big grin Scooter

The Japanese beetles certainly seem to have a spicy taste to them, judging from Byron's reactions. So do bumblebees and yellow jackets. He doesn't just swallow them, but takes maybe 10 seconds to smack.

Late August and September are bountiful harvest times. I find a few in the house year-round, though.

yeah no. what if you decide to adopt a rabbit or guinea pig? it would be a constant struggle to keep him away. It's better that dogs don't associate RMB's with having to harm somthing.

No, I have never once considered it, not only because of the fact that we do have a couple of animals, including feral cats around the property that some dogs might consider prey, that are considered prey animals, but also for the reasons Darby and a few others mentioned, I also don't think it's really fair to the prey since they have no chance of escape being trapped in a fenced or caged area. My dogs seem fine having toys to chew to shreds and to chase, they have not tried to eat/attack/kill the smaller animals here and seem to have no interest in doing so, but like I said they also have toys to chase and chew up in addition to a quarter acre out back to run around and chase toys in.

I've read that dogs chase each other and play to mimic hunting behavior since they rarely have opportunities to in pet households. I can't remember who posted it but I believe the article was done by a dog behaviorist.
