I buy food marked reduced at the grocery store. I guess it's the sell by date. All raw meat has bacteria and just grows more the older it gets. A healthy dog will be able to do fine with even rancid meat (we have testimonies to that here bol) In the future you can smell it first and decide. The meat will get slimy, grey in color, and smelly the older it is.

You'll probably be able to smell it even if it is frozen.

Or can thaw a pkg or two.

It is most likely just fine.

You guys are such great help, but "most likely fine" scares me. lol I don't want to give my dogs "most likely". But it was free and I figured that was the best way to start. I think I will give them a piece of good chicken first, with a good date, make sure nothing goes wrong and then if I'm satisfied I will give them the scraps. Or maybe boil the meat first? They won't get the benefits of raw but it might keep me worry free... what do you think? Ugh, I'm so new I'm doing the raw freaking out thing most do. I need some comforting first I think...

If you are real worried about it... IMO? Just boil it and feed, and serve fresher stuff raw next time.

And Chamois' "most likely fine" comment? LOL, it is a pretty standard line of thought once you get into the groove of it.... I've fed some chicken that was in the fridge for too long... when I first started I would've been like, "Ew no way! Garbage" but now I'm like, "Eh... it's only a little slimy... they won't even notice". smile

LOL Kolbe at only a little slimy. Maybe I am over-reacting, but thats understandable for anyone who loves their dogs. What does IMO mean? And I think I'm just being paranoid. I'm going to freeze it, give them chicken that is human consumable and then give them the butcher's chicken. If it looks okay. My mom worked in the meat department for 20 years so maybe instead of overreacting I should take it to her and ask first. Too bad I didn't think of that before..shrug
