I wish we could do vigorous walks everyday, but it has been so durn hot that the pups are good to go for 10 minutes. The concrete gets so hot and stays that way until late at night. We do go swimming a lot though. I know this is off topic, but does anyone know how long a dog needs to swim to get the equivalent of, say a 30 minute walk? Come September we can start walking again, but during the summer the humidity and heat just make too much walking impossible.

Swimming is great for us and the furkids. If you're looking for calorie expenditure, it's tough to compute. Walking is a relatively constant activity, but swimming for play is very start/stop. A 60-lb human swimming a slow crawl for 20 mins burns 73 calories, while walking a moderate pace burns 27, so a constant swim activity is better than walking. But bouncing in/out of the water, chasing a stick, etc.?

All I know is swimming wears out me and the furball faster than anything else.
