I haven't started feeding a raw diet yet (I'm going to in the future, though) but Sandy is on a homecooked diet.

I just wanted to chime in and say: there IS hope. My sister used to have the same ideas as yours about the raw and homecooked diets. She thought I was crazy for considering them when I found out Sandy has a lot of food intolerances.

But, as the months progressed and she saw Sandy's change and the fact that Sandy has a nice, shiny coat and hardly sheds anymore and the fact that she hasn't thrown up since I started cooking... and now, she's considering looking into a homecooked or raw diet for HER dogs.

See. There is hope. And your sister sounds almost as stubborn as mine.

Also, as far as the dog being yours... I'm gonna ask the same question another poster asked... but I'm gonna word it differently;

Is the dog coming with you when you move?

Dessie;
I understand where your coming from. I know that I shouldn't get to make all the decisions for her, but I want whats best for her.
Gir;
That lady is not worth arguing with. I checked the EVO ingredients and I would feed it to Rosie no problem (well, I'd to a little more research, but you know what I mean! wink )
That's so stupid that she wouldn't adopt to you just because you feed raw. She shouldn't let her personal believes get in the way of giving a dog a home.
Love, Rosie♥

Sandy Baby;
Unfortunately, I'm not moving. I love my parents and even though my sis doesn't agree with the BARF, I'm not gonna move! laugh out loud
If you mean when I'm older, I'm really not sure! I sure hope so!
BTW: By unfortunately, I mean because of my one dog limit and the BARF thingy! Love my house! big grin

Rosie what grade are you in? I have to agree with Dessie and Pippin on this. When you are out of college you can have a dog and do what ever your wallet will allow! laugh out loud

I think its great that you want to do everything possible for Rosie, but if you are as young as 6th or 7th grade you are a long way off from being able to support yourself and a dog financially. Its best to make peace with your parents. way to go Does anyone advocate vitamins for dogs? Maybe you can try that.

Get yourself familiar with the ingredients in commercial and "prescription" food and why they are bad. (cheap, non nutritional, etc).

Go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ like K 10 said. Look at the lowest rated ones. They'll explain what the bad ingredients are and why as well as the good ingredients and why they're good.

Look at the commercial brand websites and look at the ingredient lists. Then do your own research on those ingredients, (Google, etc). Google "corn gluten meal", powdered cellulose and brewers rice just to name a few.

Ask your sister why she wants to feed organic weed killer and sawdust to the dog!

Check this out...http://www.carnivora.ca/html/dogs/index.cfm

On a side note....

It's a common misconception that the liver stores toxins. The liver does NOT actually STORE toxins, but it filters them in a 2 phase process...

1. it "converts a toxic chemical into a less harmful chemical through various chemical reactions"...

2. it then takes the results of phase 1 and "produces water-soluble substances that are excreted in the urine via the kidneys."

In other words, it filters the toxins in our blood by changing & neutralizing them into a form that can be eliminated through the urine. The only time the liver would end up "storing" toxins is when it isn't functioning properly.

Here are a couple articles on it:
Your body's filter

Healthy Liver

The second article's author is just a wee bit "full of himself", but it IS a very detailed & informative article.big grin

Thanks Babee! Great links!
Shawdow;
I'm a little bit older than that! laugh out loud
Not that there's anything wrong with being young. I've met some VERY knowledgeable 11 year olds! I'm a teenie though! So I've still got a while to wait before I move out!
Pumpkin pie;
First of all, cute name! She does let me feed raw, she just doesn't want organs in the mix. I'm pretty sure she's okay with bones though! That's a start! way to go
Pongo:
Yeah, some of it is pretty gross. I especially hate Beneful. I don't know why, but I have a very bad feeling about it, not just because it's nasty food.
