Maya
Can I have that- cat treat- please? |
| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 6:54am PST | | | | | | Maybe to start we should ask exactly what you are feeding? I was curious about whethere you are feeding any bone as well....the raw diet doesnt work without the bone...unless of course you are adding calcium, but I still dont believe you will be getting the benefits without bone. It keeps the poop firm. If she has loose stool and you have been feeding bone. Maybe you should try adding a little more bone to firm them up a bit. I agree that you should hold off on the organ until you get firm poops. My dad thought I was crazy fro switching Maya to raw, but after he saw all of the improvements she had from it, he changed him mind. Sometimes you can only change minds by example. Maya cant even eat kibble because of allergies. And I still get people saying Im going to kill my dog. Its ridiculous, what do they expect me to feed her?? | | | | |

If you are not feeding bone yet, you can add 1/2 tsp powdered egg shell per pound of meat. This will provide the calcium that your dog needs. It should also help firm up her stools.
I just save the eggshells that our family uses, rinse them, and let them dry in an open container in front of a sunny window. Then I used a cheap coffee grinder that's never been used for anything else.

| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 8:51am PST | | | | | | Yay! You've solved my problem! I need to add bones! I feel so silly! I feed her half a cup of Ground meat mixed with some Urban Wolf mixture, and then I feed her the other half for dinner. Urban Wolf is supposed to have all the things in a balanced diet except for the meat, so I'm a little confused as to why it doesn't have calcium... | | | | |

My husband's sister is the adoptions director for an animal shelter and won't let us adopt from her because we don't feed ProPlan or Science Diet. EVO is 'a crap food that only rednecks have heard of' and raw food is 'going to rot their teeth and give them cancer'.
My last dog died at age 18 with every tooth in its head. It died in its sleep, wasn't even sick that I was aware of. Her twelve year old dog (which has eaten ProPlan its entire life) has almost no teeth and is completely blind.
I brushed her off and got Gir and Zim instead.
You are doing the right thing, but sometimes no amount of evidence will change someone's mind.

| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 10:15am PST | | | | | | Even my vet told me the science diet she sells is garbage and contains ingredients that will eventually kill me. Look up dogfoodanalysis.com and click on reviews. Then enter your dog food brand and be shocked at what is really in your dog food. Raw is best, but don't forget some fruit and a little bit of tomato and even some BROWN, not white, rice. If all the corn and wheat used in commercial dog food was what I were supposed to eat, then why don't you see coyotes killing corn stalks instead of rabbitts and cats and the like? Mountain Lions, Polar Bears, etc. don't cook their food and remain healthy for a long, long time! | | | | |

Wow... those are new ones. EVO is pretty freakin expensive so I'm not sure where they are getting this whole redneck thing from... raw rots teeth?? Have they looked in their SD-dogs mouths lately? I'm just endlessly fascinated by what people convince themselves of despite it just logically making no sense whatsoever.

I suppose it's best to just do everything in our power to do the right thing and not worry about the rest.

| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 11:43am PST | | | | | | I hate to be the devil's advocate here but if the dog is a family dog then the whole family needs to decide what is best. If the rest of the family does not feel safe feeding raw then it wouldn't be right to force it upon them. Maybe educating them on the issue will help, but if they don't want to do it then they don't want to do it. There are good alternative foods out there, I would just choose one together.
One day you'll be on your own, have your own dog and you can feed raw

| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 1:29pm PST | | | | | | Hmmmm, the liver does detox the body which is why I don't eat it anymore (although I do actually like it).
If it is so essential to the raw diet (I'm still doing my home-work), then I will need to find organic liver.
Just a thought, maybe instead of telling them how good raw is find out all the yummy details about how bad commercial food is. Maybe ask them what it would take for them to agree to try this died?
Did you know that they can add ground feathers (which would fall under animal-by-product) in order to boost the protein level?
Nothing illegal about that !
Also, Nutro and Iams and all those companies that may not have purposely added the melamine into the food which killed so many animals (my cats were on those pouches at the time and one of them did get a scruffy coat all of the sudden), but they didn't care enough about where the ingredients for their product came from.
