Um, liver is supposed to be good for people too, where did she hear that?

As for Costco not having liver, that IS a possibility. I often do not find anything like that there... I get my chicken thighs there mainly... and sometimes ground meat. Other than that I haven't fond great deals... oh, pork sometimes.

If you are just starting out you shouldn't be jumping into organs anyway, so just start off with chicken, and when you first add organs add the chicken livers, then you can sort of graduate the dog (and your family) into the other stuff. I wouldn't be starting with beef liver and meat yet anyway. I started (and many here did ) with chicken and or turkey... easier transition. Though you will prbably get a fight from them about the bones because people are so used to hearing how chicken bones are bad... raw chicken bones are not brittle though... you have your work cut out with that crew BOL.. sorry hug

I have gotten into to many arguments over raw, but in the end my knowledge and the research I have done always prevails. I get my organ meat at Walmart or the supermarket. I mostly just buy Kidney and Liver, but you can also check out asian or hispanic markets, often they will have different cuts of meat/organs that other supermarkets do not stock.

Here is the question that I used to convince my mother that raw was a very species appropriate diet.

What do wolves and wild dogs eat in the wild?

The answer to this is pretty obvious.

Another point.. show her Roxie's teeth, and then ask her to look at her teeth and tell you what the difference is. She should find that Roxie's teeth are pointed and sharp, while hers are flat. Also, the jaw structures. A human (or other omnivores) have jaws that move side to side in order to grind plant materials, while dogs jaws only move up and down. They can't properly chew vegetables/grains and therefor the plant matter comes out just like it went in.

Another point... This can be used when your sister tells you that a raw diet is not balanced (which she will asklaugh out loud ) Ask her if she eats a perfectly balanced meal each day? Most likely her answer is going to be no. One day we may eat a lot of meat or starches and the next we may eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Dogs like humans do not necessarily need "complete and balanced" nutrition everyday. It is balance over time that raw feeders work for. So just like you wouldn't feed a child a prepackaged "kibble" with all of the nutrients he/she needs for the day, dogs should not be fed the same.

I have found that actually asking a person these questions will sometimes change their minds. It has worked for me on several occasions.

Well, I know how you feel. I want to feed Teddy raw but everyone in my family is against it accept me and my sister, obviously as she feeds Noel, Romeo and Lily raw.

My grandma and uncle were annoying me today about so I grabbed my uncle's iPhone and found some raw myths to share with them, but they both still said, "dogs shouldn't be eating better than people" and "people eat processed foods too"

Yeah but they don't have too! UGH!

I know Teddy! That's what my whole family says! That dog eats better than me!
BOL laugh out loud
They're just joking though! We have been feeding Rose ground beef, chicken and turkey for about a month now. She is doing fine, but her poops aren't getting any better, so I figured it's time to add some organs.

I think the best thing you can do to convince her is to stay level-headed and not make her feel like she needs to go on the defensive. The tone of your first post sounded like you were really frustrated, which I can understand. However, pedagogically-speaking, people are more receptive to new ideas when they don't feel like they're being called out OR that the person trying to make their point is über-frustrated with them.

Saying something like "I understand where you're coming from" may help to put her a little at ease. I mean, look at things from the perspective of most people. Vets recommend specific foods, there are all these murky studies that say NO BONES, and yet here's a group of people on the INTERNET who are advocating going against the mainstream. I can understand why your sister would be dubious.

I think you can show here all the websites you want to, prove things to her beyond any reasonable doubt, but if she's being defensive and feels like you're not acknowledging her side of things it's not going to do any good.

My advice is to try to put yourself in her shoes and see where she may be coming from. It may or may not work, but it will at least give you some good ideas of how to handle the subject with her. Sometimes it's not about inundating with facts, it's about broaching the subject from the get-go in a calm, open manner.

Good luck!

Rosie, no organs! Not until the poop is good. Small and firm for a while and then go forward.

You have to lead by example. Buy the food yourself, keep it out of sight so as not to annoy everybody, feed the dog yourself, clean up.

And you are totally right, we can eat better than the dog. We are just making bad diet choices. Maybe you can help with that too. Make some of the good good for you stuff your family likes instead of taking the easy way out. I sure wish good food for humans included more meat though. I like broccoli and soy beans and all but meat is good.

Yummmm, meat..... *licking lips emotion*
Bol, Dogster should get more emotions!
Pippin, she is my dog, but she is also my family's. She IS mostly mine though. I walk her, train her, feed her, play with her, take her to the dog park, etc...
I am a student so my mom buys her food!
I need to get a job! Oh, good news! I'm guaranteed a job as my dog trainer's assistant as soon as Rose is fully trained! YAY! That's my dream job!
Anyways, thanks Dogsters!

Rosie's poo will not firm up until you add some bone. All ground meat is not a good idea. I agree with Max. Get things under control before adding organs. You don't want to fuel to their arguments by having Rosie's tummy in turmoil. Are you feeding your ground meat with the kibble?
