| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 12:01pm PST | | | | | | Okay, I'm really angry right now. My dad and sister were at Costco and I asked them to pick up some raw ground beef, AND liver or heart. They come back with only the raw ground beef. I'm confused, so I say:
Hey, how come you didn't get my organ meat?
They "claim" they couldn't find any. Not even liver. Come on! It's Costco! They have EVERYTHING!!!!
Anyways, so my sister asks me why I want to feed her organ meat. I say it's part of the BARF diet; Raw meat, organs, and raw meaty bones.
Then she starts rambling on about how organ meat is diseased and how she's not going to compromise Rosie's health. She starts saying that I'm a know it all and then I told her everyone that feeds a BARF diet has great results. Then she starts yelling that veterinarians don't support it and blah blah blah... I told her that veterinarians aren't educated very well in nutrition, and she says they study this for their job. Well, MY vet recommended Science Diet. That tells you how educated she is.
Can you guys PLEASE educate her about BARF?
Thanks, it would really help.
Love, Rosie♥ | | | | |

Sometimes people just don't WANT to learn, unfortunately. They can "diss" all they want but they haven't seen the results... I know I'll never go back to processed food.
How do they know it's not vet-recommended? Have they talked to every single vet ever? There are PLENTY of vets who are for raw. Dr. Khuly just to name one.

| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 3:05pm PST | | | | | | My vet recommends it when asked, but he isn't pushy about it. He has 30 years experience and has seen the results first hand. Not to mention all of us here have seen the results first hand. We have nothing to gain by lying...it is much easier to just pour kibble in a bowl and be done with it then to deal with thawing blocks of chicken wings and finding organ and heart meats.
Tell your sister that you have done your research and know what you are talking about (calmly) and that when she researches into it as thoroughly as you have you will have a discussion with her about it. Until then Rosie is your dog and you will feed her what you know is the best.
Dr. Patricia McConnell from the NPR show "Calling all Pets" also recommends the raw diet for cats and dogs. Have a listen to the 12/13/08 show. I sent it to my Mom, who was the same way and it helped to keep her from pestering me further. She still is convinced he isn't getting the nutrients he needs...wait til I tell her about his recent vet check up.

Just FYI, I shop at Costco all the time, and they actually do not stock organ meats. I usually end up making a special trip to the asian or mexican markets to get my hearts, spleen, kidneys & livers.
Also, whole meats are usually recommended over ground. It's about surface area, each cut into the meat increases the surface area. Since bacteria usually thrive on the surface of meats, more surface area = more room for bacteria. Yes, our carnivorous friends can handle a higher bacteria load than us wimpy humans, but there is still a point of overload. Whole meats FTW. Edited by author Thu Jul 2, '09 3:36pm PST

Heehee. Thanks everyone, you've been great! Does anyone else know some good organ meat? My sister says that liver is where the toxins are stored, so that if she eats it, she will get sick. Is this true?

If it really were so horrible and toxic, do you think it would be sold for human consumption?
PS. My vet sells raw in her clinic. And the vet I was seeing prior to her used to feed his show dogs raw. So not ALL vets are against it.
