I originally read this on a website I was reading about cat nutrition, and now I can't find it ANYWHERE of course, but what I remember it saying is that by freezing meat such as beef heart it destroys the taurine! Does anyone have some more info on this? I always ration up beef/pork heart for the kitties and dog, and freeze, then just thaw it out and feed when I need to. Is this completely defeating the purpose of feeding heart? Should I just get enough to feed it fresh? Taurine is obviously VERY important in both a cat's and a dog's diet, so I want to make sure they are getting it!

I think the jury's still out about freezing. Cooking destroys it.

"Please note that cooking reduces the availability of active taurine, hence another reason to feed R.A.W. food. There has been some research work suggesting that freezing may also partially destroy taurine. This has been difficult to confirm. It is suggested that when feeding raw food (that has been frozen) to cats, it is prudent to supplement with raw food that has not been frozen." from http://www.barfqld.com.au/difference.htm

I'm glad you asked this question because I'm also feeding the cats raw (as much as I can anyway), and of course I freeze all my meats.

3 years of eating frozen pre-made raw, and my cats have yet to go blind (a symptom of taurine deficiency.) So even if it breaks down some, there still seems to be plenty left to benefit my kitties.

I know, anecdote is not data! laugh out loud

I believe grinding and freezing meat does *reduce* taurine content, but I don't think it totally eliminates it. COOKING meat does eliminate taurine though, I believe.

Many commercially prepared ground, frozen raw diets add taurine back in to replace what is lost through freezing/grinding.

I freeze all my (whole) raw meat and have never had an issue with my cat or ferrets.

i remember reading freezing either destroyed or reduced B vitamins and C vitamin. taurine is really important for the heart too so i try to be really cautious about getting enough of it for the animals.
