Great post, Pepper! way to go

Just for some perspective, here is the FDAs list of dog food recalls (not raw) since October 2007 (over 100 brands).

Re: Pepper's most informative post. Does it not bother anyone that Mellissa Miller of Bravo, as an official voice of the company, is lying through her teeth on the salmonella issue? I see shows of support for them. I should think that outrage at the unsafe and substandard processing practices would be a more appropriate response from loving caretakers who have been feeding Bravo.

Can you imagine the venom we would be seeing in these forums if it were Purina, and not Bravo, caught lying and attempting to deceive the public for their own PR purposes? Why is it OK for Bravo to do it?

Just another reason to try to go home prepared raw... it's not that hard, and anytime there is a coporate interest involved there are problems, and the animal industry is just not as regulated as the human food industry, which has enough problems of it;s own!

It's not o.k., but seems to be standard corporate practice. Bravo is no different from any other company trying to minimize damage in a crisis management situation.

The difference is that NO dogs died prior to the FDA recall of Bravo foods. On the other hand THOUSANDS of dogs have died from contaminated kibble from Diamond Foods, Menu and other commercial dog food manufacturers AND dogs have been dying from these foods for the last 15 years and it is only now becoming an issue.

The point of this thread is that to focus on commercial raw as a "danger" to society is biased and unfair given the track record of mainstream commercial kibble manufacturers.

Most of us would agree that foodborne pathogens should be eliminated from commercial raw and the FDA has a role to play in protecting public health. However, most of us who feed raw use safe food handling practices to protect ourselves, and dogs will not become ill from low levels of salmonella or e-coli.

As Pepper's post said, Bravo should have just said they will do everything in their power to remedy the problem. Unless future problems occur, Bravo still has a very good track record and should be given the benefit of the doubt as most companies are. Think about Jack in the Box, Wendy's and any number of restaurants who served contaminated foods to their customers. To my knowledge, none of them lost significant market share.

Aside from the alarmist thread title and misleading statement from Bravo, I don't see anyone focusing on raw food as a danger. I do see the FDA applying the same standards of quality to raw as kibble. If it is harder for raw food providers to meet those standards due to the nature of their product, as Bravo is claiming, then that could be a problem for them... and for raw feeders in general.

And again, why homemade food (cooked OR raw) is still best. Cororate America, or china, or brazil, or whatever, is not to be trusted. It always comes down to the all mighty dollar....

I envy those that can raise their own food!
